Why We Like This Place

Appearing as the picturesque backdrop in numerous movies and commercials, downtown Petaluma is a treasure trove of historic buildings, and perhaps none is more recognizable than McNear’s Mystic Theatre. Set back from the main street, opposite a small leafy park, this landmark first opened in 1911 as a vaudeville palace. Over time, it segued to silent films, then talkies and back again to live acts, becoming the North Bay’s premier music venue. Now that it’s also available as a unique wedding locale, couples can bask in the spotlight as their names go up in lights on the Mystic’s neon marquee.

While the bridal party and groomsmen get ready in adjoining “green rooms”, your guests gather under the marquee by the vintage ticket booth. They’re welcomed into the spacious lobby, which features intricate tiling and a handcrafted, wood-and-marble bar along the back of the room. The walls, covered with signed photographs and posters of celebrities who’ve performed here over the years, are like a living history. (You might want to have some fun and display your own poster as today’s “headliners”.)

When the curtains are opened, everyone is ushered into the theater. This main venue retains many of its original period details—like the ornate, turn-of-the century seats—but its renovation added something new: a large inlaid dance floor and raised dining area where the orchestra section and first tier used to be. The stage can be used for dramatic ceremonies, enhanced with state-of-the-art lighting. Needless to say, the acoustics are fantastic and there’s also a full-size movie screen for showing slides and home video.

After you exchange vows, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres are served in the lobby and front patio, before friends and family are welcomed back inside for dinner and dancing. Depending upon your style and the size of your guest list, you can host a sumptuous buffet with carving stations, mashed potato bars and desert tables on either side of the dance floor or opt for a plated reception. The menu options are extensive, and the possibilities for transforming the space are limited only by your imagination.

Their on-site wedding coordinator—who will be with you throughout your event—can help with a long list of things: book great live entertainment; arrange for official Mystic Theatre-printed ticket invitations; and steer you to cool photo ops around town, like the nearby bridge and waterfront, the one-of-a-kind mosaic fountain of faces, and an array of architecturally interesting backgrounds (including the parking lot embedded with stars!). You can also get assistance with planning an out-of-the-ordinary rehearsal dinner or engagement party in the theatre’s Game Room, which overlooks McNear’s Dining House Saloon and is outfitted with a full bar, pool tables and huge array of video games.

If you’re interested in an unconventional wedding location that’s historic and hip, McNear’s Mystic Theatre could easily be the perfect place.

A nonrefundable $1,000 deposit is required to secure your date, and the balance is due 10 days prior to the event. The venue rental fee for a 5-hour event is $3,000 Monday–Wednesday, $3,500 Thursday and Sunday, and $5,000 Friday and Saturday. It includes event coordination and management services, all necessary staff, service bar, cocktail and dining tables and chairs, plus basic lighting and sound. More hours can be arranged for an extra charge. A refundable $500 damage deposit will be held 24 hours after the completion of the event. There will be a $200 cleaning charge for any event using confetti or a similar material; glitter is strictly prohibited and will be considered damage. Meals range $15–75/person. Tax, alcohol, and a 20% service charge are additional.
