Why We Like This Place
Hidden away just off Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay, Long Branch Farms is a 46-acre spread with pastures, paddocks, horses and other assorted critters. That’s the “Farms” part. What’s got everyone buzzing, though, is “the Saloon” part—or rather, the faux frontier town that includes the Saloon… It all started with local businessman Kevin Palmer, whose lifetime fascination with Americana led to an impressive collection of memorabilia. He also had a dream, shared by his wife Jill, of creating a replica Old West town to serve as a novel party venue. Their vision and hard work paid off, and today the Palmers host weddings that are chock-full of personality.
The first thing guests see when they arrive is a massive open-pit barbecue, usually already crackling with aromatic victuals. Next, they begin their stroll down “Main Street,” a wide unpaved avenue flanked by old-fashioned storefronts and pioneer accoutrements: a dressmaker’s shop, a smithy, a livery stable, antique barber chairs, the mercantile, and the Hotel NoTell, a wink to bridal couples.
Finally guests reach a barn-style chapel poised against a backdrop of tree-cloaked hills. Beautiful and intimate, the cozy chapel includes original stained-glass windows, exquisite fixtures and pews from one of San Francisco’s most historic churches. Ceremonies are usually held like they were in olden times—with the front doors wide open and onlookers gathered on the entryway deck. Alternatively, vows are exchanged with the doorway framing the couple, and guests looking on from the street. An altar can also be set up in a neighboring meadow. All types of ceremonies are welcome here, each embracing the setting’s heartwarming simplicity.
While the newlyweds explore the many whimsical photo ops, guests engage in friendly competitions of archery, slingshot, lasso toss or miniature golf. They can even pan for gold! Take the fun inside the spacious Saloon for light-hearted games of chance, or belly up to the massive wood bar that came from The Quick and The Dead movie set. Handsomely constructed, the Saloon boasts a rich hardwood floor, vaulted open-beam ceiling and rough-hewn log trim. Gilt-framed mirrors hang on the walls, along with countless Western artifacts that enhance the Saloon’s authentic character.
Indoor dining takes place in the glamorous Reception Parlor, reminding you that the West wasn’t just about roughing it. High society would approve of the Parlor’s centerpiece: the original mirrored bar from San Francisco’s posh Palace Hotel. Elegant chandeliers and red-flocked wallpaper lend additional turn-of-the-century élan.
Outdoor receptions in the middle of Main Street take on a rustic charm, whether arranged with traditional rounds or long banquet tables laden with hearty fare (remember that barbecue?). At one end of the street, Adirondack chairs cluster around a roaring campfire, the perfect place for s’mores or snuggling under the wool ponchos and blankets that the Palmers keep on hand.
Some couples play up the Old West theme, while others use Long Branch as their private country-casual gathering spot, relishing the vintage atmosphere. Expressions of personal style are encouraged, like bridesmaids in cowboy boots and table numbers strung on a clothesline. The Palmers have plenty of ideas, as well as several antique vehicles for grand entrances and exits. They also customize wedding packages and connect you with local vendors.
Genuine, imaginative and surprisingly affordable, Long Branch Saloon and Farms is truly one-of-a-kind.
