Why We Like This Place
The beauty of the California coast is legendary, and the scenic stretch of Highway 1 between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz is particularly entrancing. Largely undeveloped, there’s nothing to distract from the drama of the crashing surf or the transcendent vision of jagged shoreline and cool blue ocean panorama. This is the stuff wedding dreams are made of, and if you long for a pretty piece of this earthly paradise for your ceremony, just reserve Liquid Sky Oceanfront Estate.
Sequestered behind iron gates, Liquid Sky is perched on a secluded coastal bluff. The imaginative two-story home, built in the shape of a cylinder, curves toward the expanse of sea and sky like a mini-coastal citadel of old. The rolling waves are a stirring roar in the background, punctuated by the occasional cry of a gull or the lilting notes of a songbird. Sea-grass and ice plants form green patches along the sandy cliffs that cascade down to the shore. It’s easy to get lost in the surroundings, but more delights beckon further on.
A short path between the home and a sheltered hillside culminates at a sweep of manicured lawn overlooking the vast seascape. Imagine the scene, set with white chairs, flowers and aisle runner; perhaps you’ve chosen to accent your ceremony with a pair of Grecian columns, or a garlanded arch or chuppa. Or maybe you prefer to have the wild ocean backdrop be your sole embellishment as you pledge your vows…. In addition to the captivating setting, Liquid Sky offers couples complete privacy; with nothing except meadows and ocean around you, the stunning natural elements accentuate the sense of occasion, as well as the shared passion and deep commitment between you.
After the first kiss, serve a champagne toast right in the garden. Then invite guests to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres up on the rooftop deck, which may be enhanced with twinkle lights or paper lanterns for added romantic flair. While some guests mingle, others are taken with a sense of exultation as they pause to survey the scenery. This view-filled aerie is the perfect vantage point for appreciating the estate’s evocative name—”Liquid Sky,” which refers to the fluid, ever-changing horizon on display. One minute daylight glimmers through wispy clouds and puffs of sea mist; the next, all is clear, just in time for a glorious sunset to burnish the landscape.
This singular property is owned by Dave Labuda, local restauranteur and burgeoning winemaker. There’s a small building on a nearby hill where he retreats to work his oenophilic magic. The Liquid Sky vintage will make its debut in 2010, but Dave’s fine dining restaurant, Cetrella, is already a well-established Half Moon Bay landmark. Just 10 minutes from the estate, Cetrella is a tasteful (and tasty) venue to hold your reception. What a perfect way to end a spectacular day!
