It’s no secret that Carmel is a fabulously romantic wedding location; and within its favored environs is an ultra-special enclave where you can get the VIP treatment you deserve and indulge in the finer things in life. That place is L’Auberge Carmel, a delightful boutique hotel pocketed in the center of town. Wooden shutters and the iron weathervane atop its steeply pitched roof may remind you of a Provençal farmhouse, but there’s nothing rustic about L’Auberge: From the minute your valet greets you at the curb, you’ll receive oodles of personalized hospitality, as if you were spending a weekend at a wealthy friend’s country villa.
A tranquil world unto itself, L’Auberge accommodates spontaneous elopements or more elaborate receptions with equal aplomb. And if you take over the entire inn, you can have your own private destination weekend. We love L’Auberge’s elegant simplicity, brilliantly realized in its central courtyard. Modeled after an Old World village square, the weathered brick plaza is embraced by the inn’s 20 guestrooms. Originally built in 1929, L’Auberge has the quaint timelessness of the best historic properties, while recent renovations keep things as fresh and alluring as a springtime shower. Terracotta pots and artichoke-green window boxes brimming with blooms are a sweet counterpoint to sturdy wrought-iron porch railings and vintage-style light fixtures. Plantation ferns, lavender and ornamental grasses soften the landscape, and a splashing fountain provides a soothing welcome.
It’s just how you picture an old-fashioned village wedding, where all the neighbors turn out to bless the happy couple, whose love stirs wistful remembrances in the elderly and sentimental dreams in the young. Your own epic romance takes center stage, with a ceremony beneath a wrought-iron archway at the courtyard’s entrance. Guests look on from chairs arranged around the fountain, while wall plaques of the sun and moon, traditional symbols of male and female power, observe your union from on high. Alternatively, have your ceremony on the beach just a few blocks away and return to L’Auberge to celebrate.
As twilight fades to evening, host an open-air reception right in the courtyard; or adjourn to Aubergine, the inn’s jewel box of a restaurant, for the meal of a lifetime. Whether you’re a genuine gourmand or just want the best for your special day, you can entrust your cuisine to Aubergine’s superb culinary team. Executive Chef Justin Cogley and Executive Pastry Chef Ron Mendoza will personally customize your menu, and the sommelier will assist in pairing it with vintages from the inn’s outstanding 4,500-bottle wine cellar. (And don’t forget to check out Aubergine’s neighborhood sister restaurant, Cantinetta Luca, for your rehearsal dinner or casual get-togethers.)
Beautifully designed guestrooms beckon at evening’s end. The Superior Peek View King Room on the top floor (a favorite with newlyweds) looks out to treetops and a ribbon of ocean on the horizon. Fees & Deposits
50% of the total event cost is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 14 days prior to the event. Meals range $89–125/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.
