Why We Like This Place

A beach in the middle of Oakland? With water and sand and everything? Yes! And so much more, thanks to the East Bay Regional Park District, who developed this scenic gem as one of its first three parks back in 1938. Today, the 48-acre property is a neighborhood oasis where busy urbanites can experience nature’s rejuvenating powers. Lake Temescal can even become your own private getaway when you rent the handsome Beach House for your wedding or special event.

It’s a leisurely stroll from the parking area down to the Beach House, picnic lawns and lake, and your guests will find it a rewarding nature walk. The East Shore Trail gently curves through stands of oak and willow, revealing sensory surprises: A flicker of ginger turns out to be a red squirrel; native songbirds warble from the treetops; the air is scented with the spicy aroma of bay laurel. Water lilies grace the shoreline, while butterflies flit amongst the cattails.

As the path slopes downward, the trees part to reveal the Beach House set against a forested knoll, overlooking a sweep of sandy shore. The two-story building has a cut-stone foundation accented with a trio of arches on the lower floor. The upper story (which is the rental space) is all windows, promising a spectacular view. Constructed in 1940, the historic Beach House has the quality craftsmanship and relaxed, unpretentious style typical of the era. Two wide flights of stone steps lead you to the rear of the building, where a terraced garden provides a lush backdrop to a charming flagstone patio. Fragrant roses in creamy white, lipstick pink and deep scarlet bloom from spring to fall, a romantic addition to any wedding ceremony. The sound of rushing water beckons you to a nearby footbridge spanning a waterfall that cascades down to the lake. Boughs of oak, fern and colorful rhododendron encircle a small clearing just beyond the bridge. A stone bench invites you to survey the waterscape below, where snowy egrets and cormorants cavort in the lake, and majestic blue herons pose regally on the mossy bank.

As the evening grows cool, your guests can still enjoy the lakeside panorama as they retreat inside the Beach House, thanks to the long row of picture windows in the Lakeview Room and adjoining Fireside Room. Both spaces evoke an Americana theme, with gleaming hardwood floors, log cabin walls awash in an oh-so-pale mint green, and polished copper wall sconces. The Fireside Room also boasts a high ceiling with dark, rough-hewn open beams. A grand flagstone hearth at the far end crackles and glows with a gas-burning fire, keeping everyone toasty. Double French doors give a glimpse of the garden, and admit more natural light. Leave these doors open during your event, and you’ll let in the soothing harmony of the waterfall and the songbirds.

The Beach House and its peaceful surroundings capture the gentle simplicity of the past, and when you come here for a visit you might find yourself daydreaming about the possibilities…an intimate garden fête, complete with breezy broad-brimmed hats and elegant china…the nostalgic warmth of a holiday gathering around the fireplace…a picnic on the patio, while lake trout jump for dragonflies in the lazy summer twilight…or stealing a kiss from your sweetheart on the shore of the moonlit lake. Be creative—whatever celebration you imagine, Lake Temescal Beach House will make it wonderful.
