Why We Like This Place
La Costanera, a Michelin-starred culinary destination just north of Half Moon Bay, is an upscale all-in-one event venue with gourmet panache. Perched on a bluff above Montara Beach, this gorgeous restaurant is nothing short of a masterpiece. The three-level, 10,000-square-foot building is shaped like half of a modern Mesoamerican pyramid, with slanting windows and skylights that embrace a breathtaking ocean view. Its overall design reflects a contemporary global aesthetic, artfully blending rustic, natural elements—rich woods, sea shells, distressed metal—into the décor of the geometrically shaped rooms. Cleverly styled furnishings and accents, such as old-fashioned maps inlaid into some of the tabletops and nautically inspired mobiles, convey an antique seafaring flair. The effect is beautifully original.
La Costanera’s layout offers supreme event versatility, and whether you buy out the entire restaurant for your event or reserve individual sections, there are no rental fees as long as you meet the food and beverage minimums. The main floor houses the restaurant and a semiprivate dining area called the Greenhouse, with its own fireplace and atrium. Glass doors open to an oceanview patio, complete with fire pit, for outdoor dining or an intimate ceremony. Back inside, a staircase leads to a skylit balcony that overlooks the action on the main floor. This private enclave can host rehearsal dinners, showers or small gatherings.
The lower level holds the bar and lounge, a very cool space for receptions, social hours and after-parties—La Costanera can stay open until 2am. A long bar serves up the drinks (we recommend the house-made sangria or their pisco sour, a Peruvian cocktail that’s one of our all-time favorites). Gleaming tile floors and Oriental carpets enhance the space’s exotic luxe; a sunken lounge area, normally outfitted with velour couches and club chairs, can be cleared ahead of time for dancing. Glass doors open onto a beachfront patio, whose glorious panorama of sea and sky makes it quite the romantic spot for ceremonies. A footpath leads directly to the sand, so while your guests are sipping sangria, you and your bridal party can pose for photos alongside the waves.
The food and drink is as impressive as the setting. Chef-owner Carlos Altamirano already has two critically acclaimed restaurants to his credit, Mochica and Piqueos, and this latest venture is sure to add to his culinary fandom. Altamirano’s fusion dishes reflect his country’s Asian and Mediterranean influences, and introduce some fascinating indigenous components like yucca fries, sweet plantains and blue potatoes. Seafood is the star here, but entrées like lamb chops in mint chimichurri sauce will keep carnivores contented, too. La Costanera brilliantly showcases Peru’s national dish, cebiche, in a dozen or so provocative interpretations, and they even have a cute cart to serve it up to your guests. Round out the appetizers with an assortment of tapas and anitcuchos (South American-style skewers), and you have a cocktail hour that’s pure foodie fun. Just don’t forget the pisco! La Costanera has an entire menu of pisco variations, ensuring your signature cocktail will be unique (mojitos are so 2008…).
The expert staff will help you navigate the novel food and drink options, and can assist with event extras—entertainment, late-night service, valet parking, flowers, favors and more. With its hip vibe, cutting-edge cuisine and stunning atmosphere, La Costanera is definitely a venue to put on your short-list.
