Why We Like This Place

At the Hotel Vitale, the luxury is subtle. A member of the Joie de Vivre family, this boutique hotel along the revitalized Embarcadero strikes the hard-to-find balance between contemporary and warm—think reclaimed wood and river stones mixed with sleek minimal design and you get the idea. The hallmark Joie de Vivre finesse is everywhere, from the swanky circular bar downstairs to the terraces on the upper floors, making this a chic setting for a wedding, reception or post-wedding brunch.

The overall feeling of serenity and vibe of cool permeates every space in the hotel. On the first floor, just off the street-level lobby, the Amalfi Coast Room offers an ultrastylish backdrop for seated dinners and lounging. Almost sheer, platinum-colored curtains filter in daylight (or the city lights at night) but keep the room private, and thanks to its neutral palette the Amalfi Coast dresses up beautifully. Formal dinners here shine, with brocade linens, Chiavari chairs, and candlelight; it also makes an excellent lounge with a bar in the corner, overstuffed white couches and large potted palms.

The hotel’s signature restaurant, Americano, provides several options for parties. A circular room at one end works well for private cocktail receptions or brunches; warmth comes from wood floors and buttery club chairs, which are arranged so that guests can look out the abundant windows to the palm-lined Embarcadero beyond. In the intimate private dining room at the opposite end of the restaurant, a curtain separates rehearsal dinners from the main dining area. An expansive patio right outside is a harmonious counterpart to the adjacent Embarcadero: Tall bamboo and wooden furniture—plus the requisite heat lamps—create a relaxed, yet civilized, ambiance.

Take the elevator to the hotel’s peaceful upper levels, and you’ll find the terraces and spa that make this place truly special. The fifth-floor terrace overlooks the Ferry Building and bay, and is an excellent spot for a cozy ceremony, cocktail party or small seated dinner. The two-tiered terrace on the seventh and eighth floors is also a stellar location to tie the knot or host a standing reception. With its slightly higher vantage point maximizing the view of the Ferry Building, Embarcadero and the Bay Bridge, this outdoor aerie transforms into a gorgeous above-city party scene.

On the hotel’s penthouse level, the Vitale Spa pampers bridal parties in style before—and after—the wedding. Who can say no to an infinity soaking tub set amid a rooftop bamboo garden, where all you have to do is “look up at the sky and imagine where your skin ends and the water begins?” Couples can enjoy a side-by-side massage (with a view of the Bay Bridge), not to mention daily private yoga classes.
In the Hotel Vitale, every element is designed with a commitment to subtle visual pleasure and pure comfort. Soft and sultry lighting, fresh lavender scattered throughout, and warm wood accents soothe the senses and make this San Francisco getaway an unlikely urban oasis.
