Why We Like This Place

A Berkeley landmark with strong ties to the UC campus, this historic Spanish Mediterranean-style establishment has charmed visitors from a—round the world since 1928. Hotel Durant’s location in the heart of Berkeley is as good as it gets: just a block from the university, minutes from Tilden Park and the famous Gourmet Ghetto, and close to the San Francisco and Oakland airports. Plus, it’s just a short drive over the Bay Bridge to The City.

Arriving guests immediately experience the hotel’s hospitality, which begins in the high-ceilinged lobby with its unique appointments, friendly staff and comfortable seating. A blue-and-gold color scheme echoes the University’s colors and gives a respectful nod to the nearby campus.

Just off the lobby are three popular yet completely different options for events. The first two are in the hotel’s restaurant, Henry’s, where delectable breakfast, luncheon, appetizer and dinner combinations are created for your guests. The Main Dining Room, filled with natural light from grand, double-paned bay windows overlooking Durant Avenue, is ideal for upscale gatherings and every type of private function. More casual get-togethers are held in the dashing and congenial pub. The third option is the Board Room, an intimate space that can be booked on its own or in conjunction with some of the other rooms in the hotel.

Upstairs is the California Room, a favorite of the scholarly crowd. Its four large windows have showered light on plenty of parties over the years, from sedate sit-down dinners to boisterous mixers to high-powered meetings and corporate functions. Off Durant Avenue by way of a private entrance, the University Room provides yet another very flexible event space. Its neutral décor is brightened by skylights and double-paned windows that afford more Durant Avenue views.

Having too much fun at the party to leave? You can take the elevator home to one of Hotel Durant’s 143 rooms. Better yet, consider reserving the entire Executive Level for your wedding party or close friends. This floor offers an exclusive lounge with complimentary continental breakfast and a wine hour in the afternoon, making it a wonderful gathering spot for your nearest and dearest. All guest rooms feature a 37″ or 42″ flat screen TV, high-speed wireless internet access, an honor bar, refrigerator, in-room safe and iPod docking station. And for the business person’s convenience, there’s a business center in the lobby.

Nearby attractions like the Lawrence Hall of Science, Zellerbach Hall, the UC Art Museum across the street, Julia Morgan Center, the Botanical Gardens and, of course, dynamic Telegraph Avenue undoubtedly add to the appeal of this much-loved Berkeley hotel. Book early—this one sells out.

Fees & Deposits

A nonrefundable deposit is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 10 days prior to the event. Rental fees range $300–900. Luncheons start at $25/person, dinners at $45/person. Tax, alcohol and a 22% service charge are additional.
