Just like every bride is uniquely beautiful, so, too, is each private estate charming in its own way. Hazlwood boasts charm aplenty, beginning with a bucolic and secluded location in the foothills of Los Gatos. It’s only a few minutes off the highway, but Hazlwood’s congenial, storybook personality makes you feel as if you were dropped into the middle of an enchanted forest.
A driveway lined with birdhouses leads to a parking area bordered by redwoods; a flower-covered archway marks a footpath onto Hazlwood’s bi-level grounds, and from here you get an overview of the lush property. On a rise to the left sits a comely wood-frame home, whose broad wraparound deck invites your guests to sit back and enjoy the view. Just beyond this home is a spacious brick patio flanked by a quaint summer house. Abundant fruit trees frame garden lawns that cascade down towards a magnificent site: a waterfall and water garden ringed with river rocks, reedy bamboo and wild grasses. The trickling of water and a breeze whispering through the treetops harmonizes with birdsong, while bullfrogs and fish dart among the water lilies. Below the water garden is the ceremony area, a rambling emerald-green lawn edged with coastal redwoods. A brick-lined aisle makes a gentle descent to a simple white-columned pergola, set against a dense grove of redwood trees, nature’s chapel for your wedding vows.
During the social hour, guests can mingle around the water garden, tour the south and west gardens, or have a friendly game of bocce on the two courts near the entrance. Drinks are served on the broad porch of the summer house, while redwood and apple trees provide shade for hors d’oeuvres stations. Dining tables are spread out over the patio and on the lawns; nearby, a petite greenhouse, decorated with café lights and flowers, holds the buffet.
After dinner, guests can enjoy dancing on the patio under the stars or relaxing in the two-room summer house. A vaulted ceiling and tall, multipaned windows create a bright and airy atmosphere. The pretty first room has a polished wood floor, and while it’s reserved for the bride’s preparations before the ceremony, it’s open to guests afterwards. Up a step, an adjoining salon features a fireplace and Italian-tile floor, making it a great choice for after-dinner dancing, as well as cake cutting and coffee service. Both rooms have French doors that are left open to the patio, so guests can easily roam inside and out.
Hazlwood has one more arrow in its quiver of delights: James and Brenda Knipe, who cater many of the events here and are devoted to making your celebration special. We have it on good authority that they cook up a storm; and since James is the brother of owner Robert Knipe, festivities at Hazlwood take on the convivial spirit of a real family affair. Together, they extend a genteel welcome to you and your loved ones.
