Why We Like This Place
More than a century ago, the mystic theologian and poet Thomas Lake Harris and his disciple, Kanaya Nagasawa, arrived in the beautiful Santa Rosa Valley and proclaimed it the perfect place to create an ideal society. Amidst the fertile, unspoiled countryside, the pair of dreamers founded one of the first communal settlements and successful wineries in California, and named it Fountaingrove Ranch.
Nagasawa eventually inherited the ranch and winery and became an expert vintner. He answered to the title of “Baron” or “Prince,” and lived at the ranch until he died in 1934 at the ripe age of 82. During his colorful life Nagasawa gained recognition from both the Japanese and American governments for his contributions to the community and the art of viticulture.
From its roots as a utopian commune, Fountaingrove Ranch evolved into its current incarnation—an upscale planned community, where a few traces of Harris’s quixotic experiment still remain, such as the circa-1899 Round Barn that was built at Kanaya Nagasawa’s behest.
Another place that bears testament to Nagasawa’s importance in the Sonoma County wine country is the Fountaingrove Golf and Athletic Club, a primary locale for special events. The three-story clubhouse features a sloped tile roof atop off-white walls trimmed in wood and stone. The timeless grace of this simple façade is complemented by a contemporary American interior. Celebrations are held in the ballroom on the second floor. A high ceiling creates an open, airy feeling; walls of windows bring in lots of sunlight and a terrific view of the club’s green fairways and rolling, oak-covered hills both near and far. A wraparound terrace lets guests step outside for a closer look. Another plus: a classically trained and award-winning chef who’ll customize your event menu, focusing on the freshest local ingredients.
With its bucolic setting, outdoor wedding ceremonies are the norm at Fountaingrove (although during inclement weather, they can be held in one half of the ballroom). The most popular site is the Wedding Deck, an oak-shaded terrace with a wooden gazebo, conveniently situated across from the clubhouse. From here, you have a magnificent vista of Fountaingrove’s 170 picturesque acres, strewn with ponds, streams and granite boulders that create a natural haven for the native wildlife. It’s not unusual to spy deer and wild turkeys come to feed, a flock of geese taking flight, and spectacular sunsets bursting forth across the mountainous horizon.
If you’ve invited just a handful of guests to witness your ceremony, then pledge your vows in the garden at the front of the clubhouse. Nestled in its own grove of trees, this is an enchanting spot and a lovely tribute to a man who believed that humans could create their own heaven on earth. When you’re standing in this little piece of paradise, you just might believe it, too.
