Why We Like This Place
Fort Mason Center embodies what most people love about San Francisco—a nearness to nature (especially the bay) coupled with novel architecture and a dose of the past. Located on some of the most prime real estate in the city, Fort Mason Center’s historic buildings sit adjacent to the Marina Green, right on the water, with postcard-worthy vistas of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Marin. Its well-preserved structures and piers recall a time when troops embarked from this point to the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII, and military offices occupied the red-roofed warehouses. In the 1970s, the site was re-purposed as an urban national park and Fort Mason Center was established; it’s since become a hub for nonprofit arts organizations as well as a desirable spot for weddings and special events.
Alongside the galleries, bookstores, and restaurants that attract the public in droves to Fort Mason, the Center has more than 17 venues that host events of all types and sizes. Two of the most popular for weddings are the Firehouse and the Conference Center. The former, a lovely freestanding hall tucked away in the far northeast corner of the complex, is considered a hidden gem thanks to its divine views and near complete privacy. It edges right up to the bay on one side and a pine-covered hill on the other, and since it’s so close to the water, couples often choose to marry outdoors on its intimate patio. From here you can see Marin’s rolling hills in the distance and hear the bay lapping gently along the shore. A tent and heat lamps may be added for evening get-togethers, like a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception or an informal barbecue. Inside, the high-ceilinged rooms dress up nicely for seated dinners, buffets and dancing.
For larger festivities, the Conference Center—comprised of three adjoining rooms—offers spectacular seascape vistas. In the Golden Gate Room, an entire wall of windows faces the marina. During the day, glittering blue water contrasts with white sailboats and the signature orange-red of the Golden Gate Bridge. At night, the view becomes a galaxy of twinkling lights from the city, yachts and bridge. Guests dine and dance beneath vaulted ceilings, while a band plays on the elevated stage. Two adjacent smaller rooms function well for the buffet line or cocktails during the meet-and-greet hour.
At both the Firehouse and the Conference Center, you can design an event tailored to your taste and budget. The managers of the property are very flexible when it comes to rules, and they embrace people who want a do-it-yourself potluck as much as those planning an elaborate catered affair. And because of the undeniably beautiful location, these venues don’t require much in the way of fancy décor—the dramatic panoramas capture everyone’s attention, so adding linens and flowers is enough to make them shine.
Though Fort Mason Center certainly serves the needs of those tying the knot, it also has a strong mission to serve the larger community of San Francisco. Booking an event here helps ensure that this landmark—and its affiliated arts organizations—remains for future generations to enjoy. In fact, a portion of facility fees go directly to improving the buildings. This is a win-win arrangement for everyone, and its appeal is not lost on socially conscious couples who realize they can have it all: it’s possible to get married in high style, with world-class views, and support a nonprofit in the process.
