Why We Like This Place
Magnificent oaks and magnolias frame the historic Falkirk Mansion, a lovely Queen Anne Victorian in the heart of Marin. Built in 1888, the house is the creation of Clinton Day, the architect who designed the Stanford University campus chapel. In keeping with the style of the day, it has a complex and intriguing roof line of gables and chimneys, variously shaped bays and plenty of decorative details.
The property was purchased in 1906 by Captain Robert Dollar, a Scotsman who’d made his fortune in timber and shipping. He added many features to the estate, including the brick steps and pond, rolling lawns, the greenhouse and a carriage house. A civic-minded man, he donated generously to both San Rafael and his hometown of Falkirk, Scotland—hence the name of the Mansion.
Today, Falkirk Cultural Center serves as a historic site, contemporary art gallery, cultural and educational center, as well as a popular spot for weddings. You can have your ceremony in the outdoor Wedding Garden, on the sprawling lawns or in the parlor. The Mansion’s interior is beautifully rendered in rich redwood paneling, and features ornate mantelpieces, hardwood floors and elegant wall coverings. When you reserve the Mansion, you have use of the entire first floor. The foyer has a huge decorative fireplace and floor-to-ceiling stained-glass windows. Have your reception indoors or, during warmer months, dine and dance on the veranda. This secluded wooden porch is enclosed by camellia bushes and an ancient oak. It doesn’t matter how you orchestrate your wedding; Falkirk will imbue it with intimacy and a century’s worth of Victorian charm.
