Why We Like This Place
For more than 45 years, an irrepressible creative spirit has thrived within the walls of Dogpatch Studios, which has witnessed film shoots by local and international filmmakers, photographers and models, and more than a few fabulous events. Given the history of this place, it’s no surprise that weddings here often take on an artistic flair.
Situated in the hip “Dogpatch” quarter of Potrero Hill, the modernly renovated three-story building is delightfully deceptive: Its spare exterior hardly hints at the expansive areas inside, but once you step through the door the cavernous 1st Floor Studio surrounds you. Boasting a 30-foot peaked ceiling, exposed wooden beams, and concrete walls and floors, this room is so large that automotive commercials can easily be shot in it. In fact, you can actually drive cars, props and oversized decorations straight into the studio, thanks to a steel-and-glass sliding “barn” door. Because of its enormous dimensions and blank-slate quality, the 1st Floor Studio can be transformed into a world of your choosing. One recent bash featured Earth Circus performers hanging from the rafters amongst giant white statues lit with colored lights; while the performers circulated, the mesmerized guests dined at round tables dressed in white linens and flowers. If you prefer a more traditional ceremony and seated reception, use draped fabric, screens, colorful floral arrangements and custom lighting to enliven the studio and personalize your event.
Upstairs, the 2nd Floor Studio is a smaller (and yes, more conventional) party space with a polished bamboo floor, white walls, and windows that look out towards Potrero Hill. It has a refined, art-gallery feel to it, and is often set up as a lounge during celebrations or a press room for technology events. Couches, rugs and even pool tables turn it into a vibrant, yet casual, hangout. For a more formal atmosphere, serve hors d’oeuvres and champagne butler-style, while your friends and family gather around tall, linen-clad cocktail tables for oh-so-sophisticated conversation.
The 3rd Floor Studio is the icing on the cake at Dogpatch, and takes full advantage of its top-floor perch. A wall of windows opens out onto a deck with a view that spans the Bay Bridge, Giants’ ballpark and the breathtaking downtown skyline. Inside, bamboo flooring, white walls, and an 18-foot atrium ceiling—combined with the stellar city views—make a lovely backdrop for a small ceremony or an intimate family-style dinner. At a recent daytime event, white draping and modern couch sets looked absolutely brilliant in the abundant daylight this studio provides. Later, as the sun set, hints of uplighting created a colorful and cozy effect.
Each space within Dogpatch Studios offers something unique. The good news is that you can use one, two or all three of the studios in any combination. For example, have cocktails followed by your ceremony on the top floor, then move down to the 1st Floor Studio for the reception, and end the evening with cake an dancing back on the 3rd Floor. Or stage the entire affair on the 1st Floor to keep things simple. You pick the choreography that works best for you. After all, the only requirement for an extraordinary event is a little creativity.
