Why We Like This Place
The drive along Highway 1 between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz is more than just the distance between two (wonderful) points: It’s a destination all its own. In the morning, foghorns sound from Pigeon Point Lighthouse, but the afternoon sunshine usually pierces through mist, letting you admire everything you pass: white sand dunes dotted with yellow bottlebrush and lavender sea daisies; parasails floating like colored balloons above the foamy surf; and handmade farmstand billboards announcing “seaside pumpkins,” “u-pick berries” and “jam tasting.” In this piece of paradise, it’s all about slow food, savoring the scenery, and having a great time doing it.
The same is true of Costanoa, an eco-adventure resort that’s ideally situated where the forest meets the sea. Poised at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Costanoa is connected to four state parks, a wilderness preserve and 30,000 miles of hiking and biking trails. The recreational activities are boundless—whether you’re kayaking or horseback riding, exploring tide pools or enjoying a couple’s massage at the on-site spa, Costanoa inspires you to tune in to the rhythm of Nature.
The rhythm of romance is also alive at this sublime sanctuary, and Costanoa is THE place for eco-chic weddings. The resort has two main hubs of action: the stunning mountain-style Lodge on the east side of the main road, and the General Store and its neighboring Cascade Restaurant to the west. From the restaurant, a path winds through cypress trees to a hidden enclave for oceanview wedding ceremonies—the Coastal Bluff, a rustic meadow with a breathtaking vista of sea and sky. After the vows, it’s just a short stroll back to the Cascade Lawn, which can be elegantly tented for a reception or left open to the great outdoors.
Larger weddings are celebrated at the Lodge, whose lovely “back yard” consists of two tiers of landscaped lawns. Ceremonies are held on the lower tier, the Lodge Lawn, which embraces a magnificent canyon and mountain panorama. Then receptions spread out on the Lodge Terrace. You can have a tent here too, but if the weather is fine—and it often is—why not stage your festivities in the open air? That way, you might spy some of the resident wildlife…a squirrel, a rabbit, a hawk…and hear the tranquil harmonies of Costanoa’s 371 species of birds. As sunset gives way to night, you and your sweetheart can make a wish on any one of a multitude of stars.
Costanoa is Bay Area Green Certified, providing farm-to-table cuisine that’s as fresh, local, organic and sustainable as possible. The genuinely caring staff helps you organize your destination weekend, whether you want a rehearsal dinner barbecue complete with s’mores or need assistance arranging group activities.
The resort offers a variety of accommodations to suit all tastes and budgets. A honeymoon suite at the Lodge is the most luxurious, but even campers—or “Glampers,” as they’re called here—can relax in a tent bungalow outfitted with a four-poster bed and maid service. However, none of the rooms have televisions, as it’s Costanoa’s objective that its guests “discover the pace of nature,” a pace that you’ll want to return to again and again.
