Just when you think your drive along this winding, Wine Country road couldn’t get any more picturesque, you finally reach the wrought-iron gates of the Christian Brothers Retreat and its Old World beauty. Here, undulating hills of terraced grapevines are crowned by the retreat’s mission-style complex and the spectacular Spanish Romanesque Mont La Salle Chapel that is at its heart. With its cloistered serenity and commanding views, this unique locale makes an inspirational choice for a wedding.
When your guests arrive, they can enjoy a welcome beverage on the veranda overlooking the pond and vineyard until the slow peal of church bells calls them to the chapel. This magnificent sanctuary, built in 1930, has a domed bell tower, lovely rotunda entry and long, windowed foyer. The soaring, crossbeam ceiling, tall arched recesses and one-of-a-kind antique organ add a sense of wonder to the surroundings, while that long center aisle heightens the drama of your entrance. Once vows are exchanged, you exit as husband and wife to the jubilant sound of bells ringing once more. (Although the chapel is reserved for Catholic and traditional Christian weddings, other marriages recognized by the Catholic Church are welcome to be performed on the property’s landscaped grounds).
Since only one event is hosted at a time, you have the flexibility of using several sites for your celebration, many of which are connected via graceful breezeways. You might start with a champagne reception in the exquisitely planted Novitiate Courtyard. This garden oasis is scented with roses and boasts a koi pond, shade trees and an array of colorful mosaic artworks. From here, it’s just a short stroll to dinner and dancing on the sweeping two-tiered Main Courtyard where strings of twinkle lights lend a romantic glow. It also includes the stone provincial steps, a favorite spot for outdoor ceremonies and “first look” wedding photos.
For those who prefer an indoor reception, there’s the inviting dining room, with its etched ceiling and wall of windows…or the modern, spacious meeting room that opens to the veranda. Wherever you choose to dine, you’re in for a treat. Under the direction of their Culinary Institute-trained chef, the talented catering team uses fresh, local ingredients (including home-grown veggies and herbs) to create flavorful dishes your guests will savor.
Looking for something a bit more casual? Visit the hilltop picnic grove set beside an old-growth stand of majestic redwoods. It’s perfect for a rehearsal dinner, intimate ceremony or even a day-after lunch of wood-fired pizzas and barbecue prepared in the open-air kitchen.
There’s something so magical and restorative about this retreat that once you’re here you’ll want to linger. Happily, there are 16 well-appointed rooms so it’s easy to turn your wedding into a destination getaway filled with quiet walks on wooded paths, a swim in the pool or exploring nearby wineries and the charms of downtown Napa.
