Casa Munras Hotel and Spa, A Larkspur Collection

Why We Like This Place

Remember the old friend of yours, who returned from her European vacation sporting a smart wardrobe, a cool attitude and witty foreign expressions? She’s still the same warm and sweet person you always loved…but boy, she sure is a lot more hip! The same can be said of Casa Munras Hotel & Spa, a beloved Monterey landmark that’s recently undergone a stylish transformation. Constructed in 1824, the original Casa Munras was the hacienda of Don Esteban Munras, the last Spanish diplomat to California.

The recent renovation pays a nod to the Casa’s Early California influence, particularly in the guest buildings and landscaping. But the lobby, new restaurant and banquet rooms, done in warm woods, stone textures and mellow earth tones, have a decidedly contemporary flair and polish that place the hotel squarely in the “now.” Modern upgrades include hi-speed wireless internet, a sleek new business center, and a fitness room—all complimentary. So is the ample parking, proving that even though the Casa has gone upscale, it’s still a friendly and welcoming event destination.

With 171 tastefully appointed guestrooms (51 with fireplaces), the hotel can accommodate your overnight wedding guests, who’ll appreciate the FeatherBorne bed, an oasis of plush comfort. For you, there’s an exclusive bridal floor in the main building, providing privacy and a convenient place to prep. The hotel’s 11 two-story buildings are spread out over the property, connected by red brick paths that meander past flowering shrubs, lofty pines and palms, and vibrant fuchsia. The whitewashed brick façades of the cottage-like buildings are laced with lipstick-pink bougainvillea. Colorful hanging flower baskets are sweet surprises in many of the first-floor colonnades.

The crowning glory of Casa Munras is its central garden, which flourishes around a swimming pool and patio. A medley of rose bushes is especially enticing in spring, when the unfurling blossoms cast their perfume on the breeze. Just outside the pool patio’s gate, willow, maple and oak trees provide dappled shade for a triangle of lawn. Here, graceful tree boughs frame the bridal couple against a backdrop of roses and the shimmering aqua pool. On a pleasant afternoon, serve cocktails poolside and savor the garden view.

Another option for the cocktail hour is Esteban, the hotel’s indoor-outdoor restaurant that’s been dubbed by local papers “a classy gem,” and “Monterey’s Best New Restaurant.” The interior has a stone fireplace and built-in bar, but most guests will prefer to relax on Esteban’s stone patio, with its intriguing metal sculptures, fire pit and garden view.

Receptions are usually held in the 2,250-square-foot Andalucia Ballroom, a warm and inviting space trimmed in wood and done in simple, understated hues that adapt to your own color scheme. A more intimate option is the Antonia, a great spot for a rehearsal dinner since it opens up to Esteban’s bar. Another choice for small events is the Marbella Room, which includes a window-lined, bricked enclave called the Adobe that was part of the Casa’s original structure.

Brides and their girlfriends will also appreciate Sano, the hotel’s spa that launched in June 2008. It features Zen-like relaxation alcoves, an outdoor fountain lounge and a “his-and-her” treatment room—and Sano can provide manicures and up-dos as well.

A short walk from downtown Monterey, Fisherman’s Wharf and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the reborn Casa Munras has much to offer out-of-town guests, family weddings or simply a pair of lovebirds spending a mini-honeymoon on the fabulous Central Coast.
