The Sierra Nevada foothills provide some of Northern California’s most beautiful outdoor scenery, including Chico’s Bidwell Park, a nearly 4,000-acre state treasure. The Upper Park, highly prized for its rugged canyon terrain, hiking trails and abundant wildlife, is an ode to nature in the wild. It’s also the next door neighbor of Canyon Oaks Country Club, whose rolling hills and profuse greenery provide a tamer version of nature and a lovely setting for your wedding.

To reach this lush property, located in the upscale community of Canyon Oaks, you drive through a wrought-iron gate past pine and oak trees to the clean-lined, contemporary clubhouse. The surrounding golf course is one of the most prestigious in Northern California, and is the key factor in an enticing incentive to hold your festivities here: a complimentary golf package. As part of your rehearsal day, four lucky members of your group can enjoy a full round of pre-wedding play or, for an additional fee, you can have a tournament arranged for all your guests. Even if you’re not a golfer, you’ll appreciate the verdant, well-maintained landscaping that often draws visiting quail, rabbits and even the occasional deer.

Canyon Oaks prides itself on anticipating your every need, and their staff will help guide you through your event. When it’s time to get ready, you and your bridesmaids can retreat to the spacious, fully mirrored Bridal Room while the groom and his attendants relax in their own space—complete with TV and poker table. From here it’s just a short walk to the picture-perfect gazebo, bordered by flowers. Set between the 1st and 18th fairways, this outdoor ceremony site affords fantastic, unobstructed golf course views. You can heighten the drama of your entrance by arriving in a golf cart or, as one recent bride did, in a horse-drawn carriage.

After tying the knot, you and your photographer can take full advantage of several nearby scenic backdrops, including romantic bridges and a waterfall made of natural rock. Meanwhile, your friends and family start the festivities with a lovely al fresco cocktail hour by sampling an array of hors d’oeuvres to the accompaniment of live music or a DJ.

For the main reception, move inside to the second-story Vista Room, so named for the banks of large windows that frame those expansive exterior views. Muted earth tones, wainscoted walls, a large stone fireplace and crystal chandeliers help set a tone of low-key elegance. A variety of menu options, ranging from tri-tip to sushi, are available for your menu. After dining, some guests will gravitate to the central dance floor while others might drift out to the large private terrace. Here they can bask in the night air, gaze up at the stars, and take a quiet moment to savor nature’s gifts one more time.

Fees & Deposits

A nonrefundable deposit, which is applied to your food and beverage total, is required to reserve your date. The amount of the deposit is equal to 25% of the estimated event total. 50% is due 6 months prior, and 100% of the final estimated balance is due 10 days prior to the event date. Rental fees range $400–2,000 depending on the day of the event and the space rented. Meals range $32–68/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional. Food and beverage minimums may apply. Menus and packages can be customized to fit your needs and budget. Call for details.
