Why We Like This Place
For years, Bob and Karen Wiemholt talked of re-landscaping the old orchard around their Oakley property. Finally, they had an incentive: home weddings for all three of their daughters. Over several years they tackled the grounds one section at a time, and their mix of planning, passion and serendipity created an outdoor tapestry of color and texture that formed an increasingly beautiful backdrop for each event. Soon, friends and neighbors began asking if they, too, could get married here. Now, a decade later, what started as a labor of love for one family has blossomed into a popular garden spot where couples seeking an intriguing location can celebrate their own love.
Brownstone Gardens has three very distinct areas, all linked with winding walkways. Completely shielding you from the outside world are a profusion of mulberry and sycamore trees, variegated shrubbery, lilies and a fragrant, multicolored Rose Garden. Welcome breezes rustle the foliage overhead as your friends and family stroll down a shaded path towards one part of the Front Lawn where they can mingle until the ceremony begins. A gazebo, koi pond and wooden footbridge with waterfall are just a few of the visual highlights that will appeal to guests of all ages.
While the bride and her attendants prepare to make their entrance, everyone else is led down another path to the secluded ceremony site, guarded by two Doric columns and a pair of stone lions. The perimeter is fringed with towering pines interspersed with miniature roses and crepe myrtles, which put on a showy display of white flowers during the peak wedding months. Instead of a standard altar, couples exchange vows in the classically designed Temple Pavilion, an impressive structure supported by eight sandstone columns.
Cocktail receptions are usually hosted on the Front Lawn and utilize the entire area, which includes lots of nooks and crannies, trees encircled by brick pavers and an old-fashioned wooden swing in the corner. As your event continues, the garden has still more delights to share as you move towards the back of the property and the Reception Area, where a canopy of trees covers the multilevel dining space. Whimsical lighting, such as iron lanterns cast to resemble flowers and old grapevines and fitted with twinkling bulbs, adds sparkle to the surroundings. A large rock waterfall contributes a soothing backdrop to this romantic setting, while tables placed around the upper patio enjoy a sense of privacy as well as a great view of the dancing on the stone-floored lower level.
Although it’s conveniently located off a main road, Brownstone Gardens will make you feel like you’ve traveled a bit off the beaten path to spend the day at a friend’s country hideaway.
