Why We Like This Place
West of Petaluma, there’s a scenic two-lane road that takes you through rolling hills and past dairy farms and sheep ranches until you reach the coast and Bodega Bay. This is the kind of sheltered estuary small craft owners, fishermen, and weekend sailors all along the Pacific love. It’s a beautiful seaside outpost that’s been passed by in the “grand scheme of things,” which suits the natives just fine—they’re quite happy enjoying the relaxed small-town pace of this little port.
In 1970 a historic waterfront structure was refurbished and turned into a charming meeting place dubbed “The Bodega Harbour Yacht Club.” Over the years it’s become a favorite for wedding parties and special events. The two-story cedar structure, with fieldstone accents, lies beyond a copse of mature cypress trees on a quiet waterside location. The building rests on sturdy pilings directly over the water, so visitors looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows facing the bay often feel as though they’re on a vessel slipping out of its berth to go to sea.
These tall windows frame the yacht club’s centerpiece stone fireplace. Guests can’t resist sitting on its wide hearth to chat and enjoy their champagne, as well as admire the fireplace’s construction. The bold fieldstone façade extends from floor to ceiling, and the flue is faced with vertical cedar boards that soar like organ pipes. The entire space is strikingly finished in knotty cedar, an effect that continues in the supporting columns and crossbeams.
Couples often host a pre-wedding reception downstairs, followed by a ceremony next to the fireplace in front of the bayfront windows. Afterwards, the party moves upstairs to a wood-lined mezzanine-style room overlooking the first floor’s dramatic glass-and-stone façade. The room comfortably seats 120 guests for a buffet-style dinner. Professional catering services, including food prepared with pride by the club’s own chef, are provided exclusively by the Bluewater Bistro.
Although the yacht club is a self-contained building that easily handles both weddings and receptions, couples sometimes hold their ceremony at St. Teresa’s church in the town of Bodega, a 10-minute drive from the yacht club. This small church is an appealing Colonial-style building made famous by photographer Ansel Adams.
The club also offers elegant beach ceremonies for couples who want to combine romance and nature. Another amenity is the availability of rental housing and numerous inns in the Bodega Bay area for relatives and guests.
Few places like the yacht club exist on the waterfront between San Francisco and Mendocino. Its architectural beauty, bayside location and scenic harbor views make it a natural for couples seeking a bucolic, yet very civilized, setting.
