Questions and Answers
What 3 words describe your work? Unique, authentic, timeless.
Tell us about your company name. Not much to tell, just our first names. Meher is a Persian name, but she is from India. Marcel is a French name, but he is from Germany. Our names communicate our multicultural background.
What should a bride look for in her photographer? Someone who knows good light and captures it, who can hold your hand if you are nervous, gets the shot without elbowing your guests out of the way, makes you look fabulous in every shot, gets along with your sometimes difficult family, and someone who feels like family by the end of the day. A photographer should never become "the story" of the wedding day, but his images should tell the story for years to come.
Why should someone hire you? We are very passionate about the art of photography and our clients. People that hire us are looking for photographers with a unique vision, but that are true to photography. We go the extra mile for our clients, are always on the lookout for that special moment and are basically "on" all the time during a wedding, letting the wedding day photography unfold in a natural and unobtrusive way. But we also enjoy setting up great creative portraits. Having a solid background (and degrees) in photography, we can handle any situation in terms of lighting, weather, etc. in a professional manner.
What are the common misconceptions about your services? Some people think we only do wedding documentary work, but we do love to shoot some glamour and fashion stuff, and are really good at making people look their best.
What drew you to this field/how did you get started? We met each other in college while getting our education in Photography, and finally realized our dream of working together in 2004.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work? We draw a lot of our inspiration from some of the old masters, such as Irving Penn, Henry Cartier Bresson, Avedon and Weegee, but we also draw inspiration from some of the young blood in the business. We live by the code that you are only as good as the last shoot you did, so it is important to us to constantly look out for that great moment.
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or most interesting moment at a wedding: Last year we shot a wedding where the bride and groom used one of the engagement images we shot for them for their Ketubah (marriage contract). They hired a calligrapher to write the inscription directly onto our fine-art prints. It was very special and somewhat emotional for us to be included into the ceremony in that way. It actually made Marcel tear up a little, which does not happen often.
What have weddings taught you? Weddings have actually made us better photographers. We have learned to anticipate moments. We have also been privileged to experience many different customs and cultures.
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be? Being able to fly or float, or be invisible at times.
What are 3 words that describe your personality? Thoughtful, observant, loyal.
What's your favorite book/movie/work of art? Marcel: Lawrence of Arabia
Meher: The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Extracurricular activities: Meher volunteers at our kids' school a lot and teaches art. We both like to cook. Marcel is an expert fly fisherman/photographer with a passion for nature and conservation. We both garden and grow our own vegetables.
Tell us about your pets, if you have any. We have five chickens and two rabbits. The chickens are tame and will follow us around and provide us with fresh eggs. The rabbits are just cute.
What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges? Don't get us started! We love good Thai food, but we love all sorts of cuisine and are willing to try things. We make the best paella in Northern California (seriously).
What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day? Marcel likes to have a nice cold beer, preferably German beer. Meher likes to read a good book.
