Questions and Answers
What 3 words best describe your work?
Candid, true emotion, and fun.
Why should someone hire you?
I can photograph a wedding without having to fix things in post-production because I missed a photo, or couldn't capture it. I am highly skilled at photographing in natural light and with strobe or continuous lighting.
I understand the amount of work that goes into a wedding and know there can be high stress and conflicting personalities. I work well others who may be disagreeable to capture photos and get those moments a couple never thought could happen.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
Real life influences my work. I'm constantly looking at people and seeing where the story is. I also love movies and keep in mind that a wedding is a story of two people in love and their day together with their friends and family. I try to tell as many stories as I can, and follow the threads from start to end.
What are the common misconceptions about your services?
That all the work a photographer does is on the day of the wedding. I put so much of myself into making sure that I am absolutely prepared for a wedding—from my outfit to my equipment. Prior to the big day, I have several meetings with my couples and questionnaires to make sure everything is how it should be.
During the wedding I refer to that list that we've created together. After the wedding I prepare images as quickly as possible for print and albums. The post-production process is fairly long, as I spend a lot of time editing and choosing the best photos before I start with color correction and touch ups.
What drew you to this field/how did you get started?
I always wanted to create images. While in college I took film studies and planned to be the Director of Photography. I went through an extensive apprenticeship program and became certified as a Camera Assistant on track to being a DP. I could see myself organizing an entire crew of people and creating stunning images, but I decided to scale things down to photography where the process and results were faster, I could work on more projects, and have the ability to meet more people.
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or very interesting moment at a wedding:
I absolutely love the Horah. It's so fun to see the couple go up on chairs and being carried around proudly by their friends and family. I really love seeing the parents go up in the chair. Their expressions are priceless.
What makes a wedding memorable for you?
Seeing couples who are truly loving of one another and all their friends and family. To see a couple who has so much love to give is really the best type of wedding.
What have weddings taught you?
That every single wedding is different. No person is the same and you need to be constantly aware that everyone has their own way of doing things.
What is the best advice you give a couple when planning their wedding?
Get a wedding planner. As much as you want to plan every little detail, you still will be able to! But will also be gifted with the experience of someone who's been working in the industry for years. It makes the entire day run smoother and all those moments you dream about during your wedding are more likely to happen because you don't have to think about anything on the day of except for saying "I do."
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be?
I would love to be able to have the sun be at golden hour all the time so no one ever has to squint or be backlit.
What are some words that describe your personality?
Happy, friendly, caring, thoughtful, fun, high tech and incredibly knowledgeable about cameras, lighting, and post-production.
What's your favorite book/movie/work of art?
This is a tough one for me because I was a film major at school. Favorites include: Pulp Fiction, Chungking Express, Bicycle Thief, Les Mistons, and Meshes of the Afternoon.
I love later Van Gogh, and impressionist work. I absolutely love The Group of Seven and would not mind one bit if the Art Gallery of Ontario was my home.
What's your favorite quote?
"The most important thing in life is to enjoy your life—to be happy—it's all that matters." —Audrey Hepburn
What's your favorite marriage advice?
Support each other in whatever you do. The beginning might be tough, but that support is needed to help get to a level of comfort and expertise.
I run marathons and coach new and experienced runners to run the San Francisco marathon. In the off-season, I run the trails of Marin and the East Bay.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead?
It is really hard to decide. I've always worked in the arts. I started my career in the camera department on feature films, and transitioned to photography upon moving to San Francisco. I feel if I were to change to a new career it would be image based, perhaps an Art Director or Photo Editor.
What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
I really love to chat with my friends, my four sisters, or my husband. There is nothing like sharing the experience of your day with others and seeing how their day was, too. Listening and learning about how others live are important to me.
Tell us about your pets, if you have any.
I have a sweet little Boston Terrier named Maui. My husband and I have had her since she was a puppy. She is full of beans and loves to play, but also loves to cuddle and snuggle under blankets.
What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges?
I absolutely LOVE Fresh. It's a restaurant in my hometown of Toronto, Canada. It's an all-vegetarian restaurant that serves creative delicious dishes. I would never say no to a burrito and frequently go to The Little Chihuahua, Papalote, and El Forlito in San Francisco. Pakwan is a fabulous Indian restaurant that has the bonus of being on the way home from my studio. My husband, dog and I sit out on the patio and enjoy dinner together when we want to treat ourselves after a long day of work.
