Questions and Answers

What drew you to this field/how did you get started? While I was working for Gap, a neighbor's friend was getting married and asked me to shoot their wedding, claiming the pictures weren't important. "OK, I'll do it then"—and boy, was I stressed and swore I'd never do it again! I was a nervous wreck and couldn't even speak when I gave them their images, but once they said they loved them, I was hooked. Seeing their faces, I saw that my photos turned photography from "not important" into actually cherished.

What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work? Old black and white film images. They are so simple, elegant and pure. Photographers like Steichen, Cartier-Bresson, Newton, Capa, Nachtwey, Lartigue, Eisenstaedt and oh so many other old school photographers. They captured the essence of the subject and that is what I try to do.

What have weddings taught you? Truly about love. It's amazing to see people at this precious, intimate moment in their lives. The fact that they are willing to share that with me is a true privilege. I've seen love at the deepest level—it's a joy to see and enlightens me every time.

What is the best advice you give to a couple when planning their wedding? Trust your vendors and enjoy the day! If you hire people you are confident with, then trust your instincts and trust them to do their jobs. That way, you truly get to enjoy the moment, the day, your new spouse, friends and family.

What are 3 words that describe your personality? Spontaneous, fun, easy-lighthearted-true-honest. OK, I snuck a couple more in there.

What's your favorite book/movie/work of art? Favorite book is Modoc—so inspiring and moving. Favorite movie is Cinema Paradis—again, absolutely and utterly inspiring in so many ways. My favorite work of art is any that stops me and makes me look twice.

If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead? I'd work at an animal sanctuary! Walking dogs, cleaning litter boxes, bathing elephants, giving bananas to monkeys or exercising horses. How soul-nourishing and giving back to nature that would be!
