Glass Slipper Gourmet

Services

Using only the highest quality ingredients in small batch production, Chef Kelly O’Brien will work with you to create a custom-designed cake with a wide variety of unique flavor offerings to choose from—like Mexican hot chocolate with cayenne or the aromatic lavender blossom cake (and in case you were wondering, she does Red Velvet, too). With her boutique-style operation, orders are limited to ensure the highest quality of service and product. The basic price for wedding cakes is $5.95 per serving.

Kelly considers Glass Slipper Gourmet to be a “one-woman show offering a two-fold service.” With a broad culinary background, she not only creates beautiful wedding cakes, but also offers a personal chef service—creating delicious and affordable homemade family meals in her clients’ own kitchens.

Questions and Answers

What 3 words describe your work? Original, elegant, creative.

Tell us about your company name. Glass Slipper Gourmet obviously has a Cinderella connotation, which automatically makes a bride feel like a princess! I feel that my service will help make a couple's "dreams come true"!

Why should someone hire you? I am an enthusiastic partner in creating their dream cake. As a small, boutique operation I accept only a limited number of orders, which allows me to focus on customer service before, during and after an event. I do my best to provide exactly what they dream of in their cake!

What are the common misconceptions about your services? 1. That I have a staff—I don't, I do it all myself. 2. That I am expensive—not true; I offer a range of prices to hopefully suit many budgets.

What drew you to this field/how did you get started? I went to culinary school in 1996 knowing I wanted to do wedding cakes, but I also enjoy cooking, so I went through the entire chefs program—not just baking and pastry. This has allowed me to work in many areas of the food industry and create a business for myself in which I get to do both cooking and baking on a regular basis.

What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work? I have many contacts in the wedding industry and find them all inspirational. I enjoy looking at inspiration boards on the Internet and in publications. I also can be inspired by wedding materials a couple may already have picked out, such as invitations or color schemes. I am frequently inspired by unexpected finds such as nature, art, furniture, etc.

What makes a wedding memorable for you? I like when people make unusual choices and make a wedding truly their own—with things that really represent themselves, regardless of what is popular or in style at the moment. Creative thinking on things like a wedding cake topper, table décor, favors, etc. can make such a huge difference in the final presentation.

What have weddings taught you? That the most important thing is the marriage—not the wedding. The day is a celebration of something much larger than this one day.

What is the best advice you give to a couple when planning their wedding? Expect one thing to go wrong…it will. Then say, "well, that was the one thing!" when it happens and move on to having fun!

What are 3 words that describe your personality? Reliable, fun, hard-working.

What is your favorite quote? "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." —Eleanor Roosevelt (Pretty much anything Eleanor says, I like!)

What's your favorite marriage advice? Don't go to bed angry…you won't sleep well.

Extracurricular activities: Crocheting, reading, spending time with friends and family.

What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day? Brushing my cat…he loves it, I love it.

Tell us about your pets, if you have any. Dennis—our black and white tuxedo cat who a few years ago ran in our front door, jumped in a chair and started to bathe… he's lived here and run our house ever since.

What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges? Ruth Chris (splurge), Agave restaurant (everyday), Philly cheese steak (guilty pleasure).
