Fr. John R. Mabry

Services

Fr. John refuses to be tied down to one ideology or denomination—he embraces all traditions and spiritualities and designs his ceremonies to be welcoming to people of all faiths. He is a part of the Benedictine Network, which provides sacramental services for people of all faith traditions. He is also an ordained priest of the Old Catholic succession, enabling him to conduct a Catholic ceremony outside of a church setting!

Pricing is $500 for weddings in Alameda County, more if travel is required.

Certified By The Guide Reviews

(What does this mean?)
These Reviews are from real brides who have used this vendor's services—pulled straight from their Certified by The Guide reference check. We only post reviews that we have collected, so we can feel confident that they are the real deal. Yes, we know. We're control freaks.

“Several guests remarked that Fr. John was one of the best officiants they ever witnessed—he was lively yet demure, and set the tone perfectly.”

“We needed a Catholic aspect since my husband’s family is very religious, and an earthy and love-centered aspect for my non-religious family. Fr. Mabry brought both sides together perfectly.”

“Our ceremony was perfect and actually exceeded our expectations. He was loud and clear and was such a soothing presence… just a great speaker!”

“Fr. John was highly organized, knowledgeable and super-quick with his email responses. After a few back-and-forth emails we had our ceremony neatly tinkered out!”

“Fr. John was the perfect balance, the perfect compromise for our wedding.”

“He was also very helpful and instrumental during the rehearsal and helped us organize our large wedding party and helped everyone feel at ease.”

“He listens very well to the needs of the bride and the groom and he does not try to impose his views as a religious man on others.”

“I felt that Father John really expressed the true essence of a loving relationship without referring a lot to God or the Bible. He connected to people on a very real level and gave meaning to our ceremony.”

Questions and Answers

What 3 words describe your work? Fun, personal, spiritual.

Why should someone hire you? A lot of ministers make you jump through a lot of hoops. My philosophy is that this is your big day, and I am going to bend over backwards to give you exactly what you want. This is a hoop-free zone!

What are the common misconceptions about your services? That you have to belong to a certain church or hold certain beliefs for a minister to help you. You don't. I will officiate for any couple, regardless of their faith, or lack of faith.

What makes a wedding memorable for you? When a couple says their vows as if there was no one in the room but them.

What have weddings taught you? That kindness and patience can prevail in even the most stressful circumstances.

What is the best advice you give to a couple when planning their wedding? Keep it simple. Murphy's Law reigns supreme at weddings. The simpler it is, the less will go wrong, and the better time you'll have.

If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be? The ability to read people's thoughts. Of course, I have to try to do that anyway—very important for a minister!

What are 3 words that describe your personality? Friendly, creative, collaborative.

What's your favorite marriage advice? The key is not finding the right partner; it's BEING the right partner.

Extracurricular activities: I teach World Religions, write books, and sing in two progressive rock bands.

If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead? I would probably teach, or write cheap horror, mystery, or science fiction novels.

What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day? A hot bath, candles, and a good book! Curling up on the couch with my wife and dog watching an old movie is a winner, too.

Tell us about your pets, if you have any. My dog Judy is half German shepherd and half chow—a very pretty dog, smart, and very friendly, too!
