Dubbed “The Kate Spade of wedding cakes” by San Francisco Magazine, Butterfly Cakes is known for its chic, contemporary cake designs. With an eye for color and texture, Sonya Hong draws inspiration from the stylish world around her—from fashion, to textiles, to stationery, and even china patterns. And with the fresh perspective of each bride, every cake designed by Sonya is truly an original work of art.
Speaking of fresh, each cake is handcrafted from scratch using only the finest ingredients: Dutch-process cocoa, bittersweet European chocolates, real fresh fruits and pure butter. Innovative flavors like Bananas Foster with walnut praline filling and Gingerbread layered with lemon filling and cream cheese icing ensure that the taste will be just as distinctive as the look!
Wedding cakes for 100 servings or more start at $8 per serving and range to about $12 per serving depending on the complexity. The average price per serving is $8-$10.

Questions and Answers
What 3 words describe your work? Whimsical. Understated. Pretty.
Tell us about your company name. The word "Butterfly" evokes a sense of beauty and also a homey-feeling that comes from the use of the word "butter." Our cakes are beautiful, yet buttery and delicious.
Why should someone hire you? Apart from our look, which is sophisticated and elegant, our cakes taste fabulous. I know everyone says that, but we truly do pride ourselves on the taste of our cakes and we're known for having exceptionally delicious and moist cakes. Plus, we have been in business for over 11 years now so we bring a lot of experience and expertise to the table.
What drew you to this field/how did you get started? I spent the first part of my working life as an attorney in a big corporate law firm. Although that was a tremendous learning experience for me, what I really wanted to do was to start my own business doing something I was truly passionate about. I envied people who wanted to talk and think about work outside of work. I wanted to be "true to myself", and find something that was more of a natural fit for me. Now, I look forward to going to work everyday.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work? Invitation designs, fashion, shopping…anything stylish that incorporates color and pattern will inspire me.
What is the best advice you give to a couple when planning their wedding? Focus on the things that will help the guests have a good time—good food and drink, good music. A cake falls into the "good food," since it is your dessert and is the last thing people eat at a wedding! I think the general emotions of the day are what people will remember the most; not necessarily the flowers or the color of the table linens.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead? Interior designer or real estate agent. I love to look at homes and all the different looks and feels you can create by the interior design and architecture.
What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day? Snuggling up in bed with my two little boys and reading them bedtime stories.
What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges? Sakae sushi in Burlingame and Osteria Coppa in San Mateo. I once used to spend a lot of time going to fancy restaurants in New York and San Francisco. Now, as a business owner and resident of the Peninsula, I really really appreciate it when a great restaurant opens in suburbia and is on par with the "big city".
