Monterey Wedding Venue
201 Van Buren Street
Monterey, California 93940
Pocketed in a leafy residential neighborhood overlooking Monterey Bay, the historic Perry House, an eye-catching Queen Anne-style Victorian in a pleasing buttercup shade, is just right for an elegant yet homey celebration.
Originally built in 1860 by ship captain Manuel Perry, this local landmark housed generations of the Perry family up until the 1960s. The property’s Carriage House then served alternatively as an art gallery, tearoom, flower shop and even a costume museum. Embracing a fresh vision of the site’s potential, Events by Classic purchased the Perry House in 2010, and their stunning renovation has re-imagined the vintage home as a dynamic wedding venue.
Ceremonies are held in the garden courtyard, a manicured lawn flanked by the Main House and the Carriage House. A stately white pergola anchors the seaward side, framing the wedding couple as they say “I do” amidst flowery landscaping and a filtered backdrop of sea and sky.
After the vows, the social hour kicks off in the Carriage House, a convivial spot complete with cocktail seating, a fireplace and a state-of-the-art audiovisual system. One wall of windows gazes into a quiet, shade-dappled corner of the garden; another wall displays sepia-toned photos of Monterey’s bygone days. The highlight of the space, however, is a breathtaking dome ceiling of amber-and-pistachio-hued stained glass evoking the room’s Art Deco heritage as well as a sense of occasion.
Just outside, a rustic stone and brick oven produces delicious wood-fired pizzas. In fact, all event cuisine is grilled or cooked to order, creating a savory aroma that melds with the salty tang of the ocean air. Equally inviting are dreamy panoramas of sailboat-filled harbors and wooded heights, which are best viewed from the cascade of balconied stairways of the Main House. As twilight descends, a sigh-inducing sunset gives way to a glittering skyscape of stars and city lights.
The Perry House becomes even more enchanting at night, when a profusion of fairy lights sparks across porch railings, tree trunks and rooflines. This is when the action usually shifts to the Captain’s Room on the lower floor of the Main House, where receptions flow freely from bay windowed nooks out onto the terrace.
Yet another intriguing gathering place is the second-story Harbor View Lounge, a virtual sanctuary of 18th-century opulence that’s also used for the bridal party’s pre-wedding prep. This spacious salon has a luxurious sitting area and an adjoining boudoir with a sumptuous bed worthy of royalty. Newlyweds often retreat to the Lounge to survey the revels unfolding below, or to share some private time.
Like its sister property, Gatherings, the Perry House is an all-inclusive venue. The experts at Events by Classic are known for going out of their way to produce personalized events with five-star catering and superb service. Their specialty is innovative roaming receptions, where food stations are strategically placed throughout the property to encourage a lively atmosphere and maximum mingling.
Blessed with enduring charm, the Perry House overflows with character, warmth and thoughtful touches, and is well on its way to creating a romantic, new legacy.
