San Francisco Wedding Venue
900 Beach Street (at the foot of Polk)
San Francisco, California 94109
Imagine having your wedding at a beachfront venue overlooking San Francisco Bay! There are very few places in the city that can deliver this particular setting, and the surprisingly affordable San Francisco Maritime Museum is one of them. Situated across from Ghirardelli Square in the heart of Aquatic Park, it enjoys an enviable location right at the water’s edge.
The building was cleverly designed to resemble a cruise ship, even down to the nautical-looking air vents! And its fabulous look will take you back in time—it’s a marvel of Art Deco style with terrazzo floors, murals and chrome detailing that are classic 1930s.
There are several event spaces on two levels, but many couples opt to host their entire celebration on the second floor. With Ghiradelli Square as a backdrop, the connecting East and West Decks work beautifully for an al fresco ceremony and cocktail hour. You can exchange vows on one deck, then simply step over to the other for drinks, appetizers and mingling. When it’s time for the reception, guests flow into the adjoining Great Room, where floor-to ceiling windows frame an almost 360-degree view of the bay, as well as Alcatraz and the city skyline.
Smaller events usually take place on the ground floor. Just off the lobby, the versatile Veranda is custom-made for an outdoor cocktail reception. This covered, tiled terrace features pristine examples of 1930s Art Deco tile murals along the wall that faces the bay. If you like, add some fun furniture to turn the space into a lounge area—with the water spreading out before you and the ocean breezes wafting in, you may feel like you’re in Miami!
The Blue Room is perfect for more intimate receptions. Constructed in the round, it boasts a high ceiling, inlaid terrazzo floor and large picture windows on almost all sides providing sensational views of the Hyde Street pier, Alcatraz, Sausalito and the historic ships berthed nearby. And by the way, those ships are available for rental, too—the museum’s Event Coordinator can also book your wedding or special event on the Balclutha, an 1886 three-masted sailing ship, or the Eureka, a side-wheel paddle steamboat built in 1890.
In addition to being in demand for weddings, the Maritime Museum is a popular choice for corporate meetings, receptions and holiday parties. Private parties are welcome, too! Surrounded by the bay and many of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, it offers the quintessential San Francisco experience to everyone who walks through its doors.
