Questions and Answers
What 3 words describe your work?
Heartfelt. Romantic. Modern.
Why should someone hire you?
I love to make gorgeous photographs of my clients—ones that capture how the two of you as you are: radiant, beautiful and just quite simply in love. In my effort to capture the personality of your wedding with its amazing details, I will not miss those moments between people, the gestures and emotions that make up the true essence of your wedding. I still keep my eye on the big picture. I take the time to get to know my clients and to understand what they want, which helps them enjoy their day, bond with me, and feel comfortable being themselves—an essential ingredient in creating compelling and natural photographs.
What drew you to this field/how did you get started?
I've been a photographer since my darkroom days in high school and returned back to it in 2003 when I was asked by a friend to shoot their small City Hall wedding. I gussied up my knowledge by studying at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, but really got my experience by assisting other photographers for several years before incorporating my own business in 2006. If you look at my body of work over the years, I've always been drawn to the people. I find the relationship between people fascinating and am interested in weddings because of that. I still stare at photographs for hours, especially the ones taken by the masters, and try to imagine the moment that was caught, and the personality and thoughts behind the subjects in photographs.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
Seriously everything inspires me. I walk on the streets and can be inspired by the guy at the bus stop or the plastic bag floating in the wind. I will never look at any movie, good or bad, the same way. I think about the choices of filmmakers in any given moment and how they have chosen to tell their story. I am really fascinated by documentary photographers, be it street, war, or social documentary. Favorites include Sebastiao Salgado, Costa Manos, Jay Maisel and landscape photographer Michael Kenna.
What makes a wedding memorable for you?
True, real people and true real moments. I am interested in all things genuine...and ingenious! The standout weddings are the ones where my couples are truly themselves and the love shines through! Pretty little details always help but when it comes down to it, it really is all about the bride and groom, and the people that surround them.
What have weddings taught you?
Every wedding I've gone to has made me think about my family and my husband. I feel like I'm renewing my own vows each time I go to someone else's wedding. Granted he's probably at home knee deep with the kids watching Toy Story or something while I'm tearing up listening to someone else say their vows.
What is the best advice you give to a couple when planning their wedding?
Sit down and figure out what your strengths and interests are in planning your wedding. You may be interested in cakes and music and can easily be in charge of such things, while your fiancé might be extraordinary with spreadsheets or even meticulous about tying ribbon and assembling invitations. It causes less stress when we do the things that we enjoy doing. And this is such a cliché, but don't lose sight of the big picture. Give yourselves a few moments alone here and there to check in with each other.
What are 3 words that describe your personality?
Quick. Energetic. Personable. Also easy going, curious, and NICE.
What's your favorite marriage advice?
Regular date nights, just the two of you.
I am of a girl of a million hobbies and interests, just like my father. Things I love are biking, playing the piano, running, kayaking, stand up paddling, and skiing—downhill and cross country. I've traveled through six of seven continents but I've barely scratched the surface. There is almost nothing that I wouldn't try at least once even though I'm not that great at it: capoeira, pilates, hula hooping, windsurfing, flamenco dancing, sewing, snowboarding, fly fishing, ceramics, meditation, the list goes on.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead?
Coordinating research studies in developing countries. My first degree is in public health. I know. It's vastly different from photography.
