Description
On June 20, 1894, 24 women gathered together to formally organize the Woman’s Club of Palo Alto. Their goals were self-improvement, mutual help and community work, and they didn’t waste any time fulfilling them. Within the first four years of the club’s existence, they’d founded the city’s first reading room and library, as well as its first elementary school and high school.
Their dream of having their own clubhouse, however, was not realized until 1916. After twelve years of continuous fundraising they’d managed to raise $5,300, and their Tudor-Craftsman-style "home" was built. At the time, they worried that it was too far removed from the center of town, but its location in a quiet residential neighborhood has proved a felicitous one.
Weddings are held in the Ballroom, a simply designed space with grand proportions. On two sides, tall windows flood the room with light, which reflects off polished maple floors. Eight brass-and-glass fixtures suspended from the high ceiling, and dark wood wainscoting and trim throughout add period character. Have your ceremony on the stage, which is framed by a red velvet curtain and illuminated by footlights. There’s even a pair of baby grand pianos for musical accompaniment. Buffets are usually set up in the adjacent Fireside Room, aptly name for its tiled fireplace, and joined to the Ballroom by folding French doors.
The founders of the Woman’s Club of Palo Alto may not have envisioned their clubhouse being used for matrimonial celebrations, but its spacious airy interior and ample kitchen facilities make it a popular spot for weddings. And besides, it’s one of the few places we know of that has twice as many restrooms for women as for men. Good planning, ladies.
