Why We Like This Place

By ingeniously combining three separate properties in the heart of Pasadena's historic Old Town district, the owners of Villa SORRISO have created a sensual Mediterranean-style venue that feels like an Italian hideaway with a decidedly hip, urban edge. From the clean-lined, angular archway that welcomes you into the large center courtyard to the ivy-covered, stucco buildings with red-tiled roofs, this wildly popular dinner club offers a visual feast, juxtaposing the old and new seamlessly.

The romantic courtyard is truly the heart of Villa SORRISO. The first thing you notice is the ultra-modern metal fountain, which contrasts beautifully with the old-growth oak trees rising up behind it and the perfectly weathered exterior of the surrounding 1920s Spanish Revival architecture. Imagine a Tuscan piazza and you'll get an idea of what a charming setting this could be for your ceremony, as you make your dramatic entrance through wrought-iron gates in the back and walk past the white-draped cabanas that line the perimeter. This is definitely not a cookie-cutter wedding location, and how you design your special day is limited only by your imagination, because there are myriad choices, both indoors and out, that range from a large open dining room to intimate nooks that flow from one to another.

You may opt for cocktails and gourmet appetizers on the wraparound side patio, where awnings shield you from the sun but allow a peek at the action on Colorado Boulevard. Or head inside to the swanky Martini Bar and Lounge, featuring a high, beamed ceiling, green marble bar and tucked-away VIP section. If you're looking for a private club environment, the upstairs Zebra Lounge (named for its unique wood) is for you. It looks out onto the courtyard and has a Z-shaped black marble bar with comfy leather seating. There's also a little Juliet balcony off the Lounge—custom-made for that traditional bouquet toss. The nearby Venetian Room can be a cozy spot for a rehearsal dinner or serve as your very large Bridal Room.

When it comes to your main reception, downstairs is the place to be. For a more traditional approach, the light-filled Tuscan Room offers banquette and table seating with beautiful views of the courtyard, highlighted by reflections from tall, framed mirrors. A less conventional approach to dining might be what the resident event planner calls a "progressive dinner," during which your guests move from one intimate space to another (all overlooking that gorgeous courtyard) for each course.

Dancing is outside on the patio, where the trees are strung with lights and black & white films and images can be projected directly onto the side of the building. One major perk is that you don't even have to hire your own entertainment since Villa SORRISO is known for its weekend lineup of DJs and bands. Of course, you can also do a buyout, have the entire place to yourself and choose your own music.
