Description
It’s delightfully ironic that one of the most inviting wedding locations in the San Gabriel Valley started out nearly a century ago as a private refuge for men only! The University Club of Pasadena (which now happily accepts female members), was originally founded in 1922 as a haven where men of wealth and influence could have a “meeting of the minds”—a quiet spot to lunch, exchange ideas and listen to speeches by such luminaries as Albert Einstein, scientist Edwin Hubble and Nobel laureate, Dr. Albert Michelson. Today, the club, situated on a leafy cul-de-sac near the campus of the Fuller Theological Society, retains its air of dignified calm while offering charming craftsman interiors where you can celebrate your own meeting of the minds—and hearts.Inside, the Center Hallway exudes the traditional grace of a well-heeled sitting room, with its white paneled walls, dark wood floors and upholstered wingback chairs. After your guests gather and register here, they can be ushered to the cloistered and very romantic Courtyard. A billowing canvas canopy shields this lovely patio area from the sun, giving it a softly diffused light. Lush feathery ferns line the perimeter and bright flowers drape over hanging pots. At the far end, a gurgling fountain offers a natural backdrop for exchanging vows.
You can opt for cocktails (or dinner) inside the Lounge to your left, a large airy space with exposed-beam ceilings, a built-in bar and picture windows overlooking the Courtyard.
Or, experience the grand scale of the Great Hall to your right. This truly impressive dining room has the look and feel of a very refined great room that you might see in a historic mountain lodge. At one end, a 30-foot floor-to-ceiling arched window lets in natural light and offers a peek at the greenery outside. Multi-tiered gold chandeliers draw your eye to the dramatically high rafters of the intricate, cross-beamed ceiling and suffuse the room in a honeyed glow. The marvelous collection of gilt-framed original oil paintings depicting early California life adds a unique touch and huge visual impact. With seating for over 200, this ballroom-sized hall can easily accommodate a substantial dance floor and band, yet it never loses its sense of warmth, thanks to features like a walk-in stone fireplace and rich, wood-paneled walls.
For smaller, more intimate gatherings, there’s the Garden Room, a cozy private alcove on the main floor that looks out directly onto the Courtyard. An upstairs option is the “clubby” St. John Library, with its old leather bound books and wooden cabinets. Also located upstairs is the Sun Room, a commodious bride’s room with a bird’s-eye view of the Courtyard. If you’d like something more casual, try the Club Pub on the lower level. Whether upstairs or down, photos and drawings of esteemed members remind guests of the University Club’s legacy, and enhance their appreciation of this wonderful venue.
