Description
Exploring Marin County can be a lifetime passion, especially as you discover the region’s wonderful hidden vistas, many of which are seldom publicized in guidebooks and tourist literature. One of those little-known views can be enjoyed at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin. From its hilltop setting high above Terra Linda the center offers a grand panorama of the north flank of Mt. Tamalpais that most people will never see.
Superb as the view is, the heart of this venue is a simple, tranquil courtyard, graced by a grove of mulberry trees whose broad leaves spread bountiful shade over a lush lawn. A curving three-level terrace rises toward an arbor-topped knoll along two sides of the space, and an ornamental pool and fountain in the center teems with goldfish and water lilies. Water gurgles over a sandstone ledge and spills into the pool creating a calming, almost musical sound.
Beginning at the courtyard, a gravel path winds up past flowers, herbs and succulents to a flagstone-paved area on top of the knoll. With a tall oak and an arbor as backdrops, this is a compelling spot for photos. From this height you can see a quintessential Marin panorama: Terra Linda and Mt. Tam to the west and southwest; the wooded hills that run south of Santa Venetia from Civic Center to China Camp; and a commanding view of San Pablo Bay.
The center’s Fellowship Hall is the most popular site for dining and dancing (or for winter indoor ceremonies). It has a high ceiling of pine beams and rafters, an oak floor and picture windows on three sides, including one that looks out over Terra Linda and that impressive Mt. Tam view. The more modest Fireside Room is warm and intimate, ideal for a small wedding or reception. Its focal point is a tall sandstone-faced fireplace, flanked by picture windows that look out to a dense oak wood. The room has direct access to the courtyard, and in winter a roaring fire makes it especially inviting. Whichever space you use, your guests can party till 11pm.
Caterers will find counter space galore and a professional range in the large kitchen, and UUCM is happy to refer brides to a preferred list of seasoned vendors.
Their first look at the courtyard is usually all it takes to convince many brides to get married here. But if more reasons are needed, the center’s great views, affordability, and beautiful setting quickly clinch their decision.
