Why We Like This Place

“There’s more than one way to bend a tortilla!” proclaims Tortilla Flats’ website. There’s also more than one way to hold a wedding, reception, rehearsal dinner or any other celebration at this colorful lakeside hacienda. With its lush tropical vegetation, hand-painted murals and waterfront terraces offering panoramic views of Lake Mission Viejo, this popular Saddleback Valley restaurant may have you thinking you’ve been transported south of the border, to the mellow Mexican coast.

Strolling past an Aztec-style fountain etched with tropical fruit designs, guests enter the cantina through Spanish arches leading into a sunny lobby accented with gleaming blue and patterned tile, terracotta floors and rustic wooden ceilings. Cool breezes from the lake flow through an open-air atrium, where a gift table can be set up. Beyond, an outdoor courtyard, shaded lakefront verandas and open patios are fine spots for sipping margaritas and watching the kayaks and sailboats glide along the water’s glassy surface.

There’s nothing traditional about the casually intimate waterfront ceremony site here, where most couples tie the knot. Under a wrought-iron arch you’ll say your vows while your family and friends observe from cascading patios. Up-close seating for a few VIP guests is available, but most of your audience will be standing above you for the al fresco formalities, taking in you and yours against the glistening lake backdrop.

While you capture photographic memories in one of numerous landscaped areas, everyone else gathers in your reception area to mingle and enjoy a variety of appetizers. Between the Dining Room and a series of free-flowing open and enclosed patio areas—the latter with windows that swing open for natural climate control—you have an extraordinary amount of flexibility in staging your event. Every room and patio has a view of the lake, and if you’ve decided to reserve one of the open-air patios, Tortilla Flats will also hold an indoor space as backup in case of inclement weather.

Cuisine is hardly an afterthought at Tortilla Flats. There’s no rubber chicken here, only the finely prepared Sonoran and American fare this popular dining establishment has been serving up since 1949. Overseen by a banquet captain who’s been with the facility for more than 15 years, the kitchen uses the freshest ingredients for specialties that are all prepared on site.

Table service is available, but champagne brunch and dinner buffets are a favored option at Tortilla Flats. Create your own showstopper with varied appetizer, salad and entrée selections. For added fun, let your guests get in the act with an illuminated three-tiered margarita fountain with limes and salt on the side, for make-their-own drinks.

You don’t have to worry about setting a lively tone at Tortilla Flats—the festive atmosphere’s already in place. And with no facility, bartending, linen, dance floor, set-up or parking fees, you won’t be muttering “ay caramba” after the final dance.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The patios hold up to 100 standing guests, with seating for a few VIP guests up front. EVENT/RECEPTION & MEETING CAPACITY: The site holds up to 120 seated or standing guests outdoors; indoors up to 120 seated or standing.

Fees & Deposits

A $200–1,500 deposit is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 10 days prior to the event. Wedding packages range $39–65/person. Tax, alcohol, and a 21% service charge are additional.

Meal packages for other kinds of events, including rehearsal dinners, private parties and corporate events, start at $20/person.
