The Sky Room

Description

In the heart of downtown Long Beach, high atop the historic Breakers Building, is the West Coast version of New York’s famous Rainbow Room: The Sky Room. This hip establishment transports you back to Hollywood’s Golden Age, when stars came here to drink, dine, dance and, of course, romance. The building itself, a 1926 Spanish Baroque beauty, was designed to symbolize the glamour and sophistication of the era, and the era’s glitterati made frequent appearances in the Sky Room. If you happened to be in the restaurant on any given night back then, you might have discovered Liz, Clark, Cary or Errol nursing a cocktail in the next booth.

An event at the Sky Room can still make you and your guests feel like VIPs. The experience begins at the entrance to the Breakers Building, as an elevator attendant dressed in top hat, tails and gloves greets you at the door as if you’re a celebrity. He then escorts you into a gorgeous Art Deco elevator and accompanies you up to the fifteenth floor, where the Sky Room is perched above the scenic Pacific coastline. The lights are low (doubtless to maintain your superstar anonymity), which only heightens the impact of the spectacular 360-degree view—including a dazzling panorama of Long Beach Harbor. While you sip a martini from the curvy wraparound bar, take in a few of the room’s other noteworthy details, like the Riedel crystal and gold-rimmed chinaware on the tables, and the gleaming hardwood floor with mahogany inlays (divine for dancing to a live swing band).

A pair of glass-and-brass double doors opens to the adjacent Dejaview Room, a circular private dining room whose large picture windows overlook the Long Beach harbor and a stretch of coastline down to Newport Beach. Raise a glass or throw a kiss to your family and friends—you can easily see them all, as well as the city lights, from your seat-of-honor at the elevated head table.

If the view from here is not dizzying enough, take the short staircase up to The Sky Room Bar, a stellar place for a cocktail reception. Graceful arched doors and windows, a tile floor, wrought-iron details and a murmuring terracotta fountain evoke the courtyard of a Spanish villa. Sip a glass of wine to the passionate chords of a flamenco guitarist, or step out onto the balcony terrace to watch the sun set over the ocean.

Couples who want to get married in this landmark building exchange vows in the Wedding Chapel on the ground floor. White columns topped with gold urns line both sides of the aisle, while a trompe l’oeil blue sky overhead gives the room an ethereal quality. Guests watch the ceremony from cushy benches covered in white, pin-tucked fabric. For an elegant reception, simply walk over to the Empire Grand Ballroom. Ladies, dust off your ball gown and jewels for this opulent room, sparkling with crystal chandeliers, mirrored pillars and fine china.

Whether you’re indulging your Hollywood fantasies in the Sky Room, or admiring your gorgeous reflection in one of the ballroom’s many mirrors, a little of Hollywood’s scintillating past is sure to rub off on you at this grande dame of the Long Beach skyline.
