The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco

Why We Like This Place

Set atop prestigious Nob Hill, The Ritz-Carlton is housed in one of San Francisco’s finest examples of neoclassical architecture. Originally built in 1909, the block-long structure has an impressive and stately façade. As you step inside, you’re surrounded by The Ritz-Carlton’s signature style—handsome, classically designed spaces graced by 18th- and 19th-century museum-quality art and antiques. Gold-framed seascapes and landscapes, Persian carpets, crystal chandeliers, silk wall coverings and enormous fresh floral arrangements lend a sophisticated, yet understated, quality to the hotel’s public spaces.

Large parties take place in the Ballroom, which is often used in tandem with adjacent galleries. The galleries themselves are perfect for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres—spacious, with high vaulted ceilings, ornate woodwork, large oil paintings and silk-covered walls in gold tones. Seated receptions follow in the Ballroom, a sizable and regal space that can be partitioned into smaller segments. The room is warm: Light glows from crystal chandeliers suspended from a recessed oval ceiling, and walls are softened by panels of patterned, muted gold silk brocade.

The hotel has more event spaces on the second and third levels, each of which can be used for a private rehearsal dinner or small reception. All are nicely designed with floral arrangements, light wood molding and wainscoting. For outdoor parties, there’s a beautiful red-brick courtyard, which has a lovely cityscape and is enclosed by an impeccably manicured garden of roses, lavender, ivy and flowers. Glass-topped tables with umbrellas and wrought-iron chairs dot the courtyard, and the central portion can be tented if the weather doesn’t cooperate. After the celebration there’s no need to rush off—the bride and groom can unwind in one of the hotel’s two Presidential Suites, and be whisked off to the airport the next day by a hotel-arranged limousine service.
