Why We Like This Place
What if you could spend a few days before your wedding relaxing with your family in the same beautiful country setting where you plan to say "I do?"And what if, after a few days among mountains, woodlands, dramatic vistas and some delightful farm animals, you could arrive at the altar as relaxed as a cat that's been dozing in a shaft of golden sunlight?
Well, wedding venues that offer this kind of experience are hard to find, but we know of one hidden away in Pala. It's a wonderful estate set in a classic San Diego back-country landscape, halfway up a mountain rife with oaks, cactus, palm trees, bougainvillea, and dramatic granite boulders and outcroppings. And, of course, it basks in Southern California's year-round glorious climate. From its expansive picture windows it offers a spectacular overview of the Pala Valley, where coastal fog often lingers until late morning—then melts away to reveal the Pacific Ocean sparkling in the distance.
Called The Condor's Nest Ranch, this delightful property comes with a plethora of charming distractions. The driveway leading to the main house is flanked by a large enclosed barnyard that's home to an extended family of llamas, horses, donkeys, peacocks, pigs and goats. (They have complete run of their yard, but it's up to you whether you want to mingle with them.) The house itself is a low-slung, red-tiled, 5-bedroom/4-bathroom structure, enhanced by patios and trellises. Its west-facing side is lined with huge windows that frame the awesome valley view below. The 6,000-square-foot residence is utterly sophisticated and appealing in its materials and look—furnishings and appliances are state-of-the-art, and carefully selected western-themed art and antique collectibles convey a laid-back air.
Couples and their families often reserve the venue for a week prior to the big event to unwind and spend quality time together. On the wedding day, guests come up the hill to witness and celebrate, then leave after the party. Once they're gone, families easily slip back into the ranch's pre-ceremony serenity. It's not hard to see why: Each bedroom has private access to the outside, while the master bedroom has its own deck and fireplace. When folks want to gather, they chill out in the great room, a combination family room and kitchen beneath a beamed cathedral ceiling. Here, the fireplace, soft Berber carpeting and patented valley vista invite warm socializing. The adjoining formal dining room opens out to the foyer (sporting a fountain in its center!) and living room, which features a huge fireplace and plenty of comfortable seating for reading, schmoozing and daydreaming.
Weddings take place on the lawn beside the house and pool, with mountains and woods as a backdrop. Directly over the spot where couples exchange vows, a tall ash tree—perhaps 200 years old—stands majestically. Receptions rock out by the pool or over by the property's second house, a rustic 2-bedroom "cabin" that's decorated with old business signs, license plates and western paraphernalia. Here and there Old West-style relics, including a classic Conestoga wagon, add to the site's appeal. A timeless red barn contributes a final touch to the easygoing retro feel of this country getaway.
The Condor's Nest Ranch is a restful, almost otherworldly place. It will work its magic on you so that no matter how tense you are when you get here, you'll feel totally calm and restored by the time you leave.
