The Balboa Bay Club and Resort

Why We Like This Place

Set on 15.5 waterfront acres along California's coastal Riviera, The Balboa Bay Club & Resort shines as a destination wedding venue. Known as the "Host of the Coast" since 1948, this Newport Beach landmark is now a full-service private club and public hotel. With veteran hotelier Henry Schielein as President/COO, a 500-person staff, and 17,000 square feet of lavish event space, it's one of the region's premier locations for all types of celebrations.

Since the heady years following World War II when Newport Beach was evolving into both a coastal resort town and a celebrity magnet, The Balboa Bay Club & Resort has attracted its share of the glitterati: Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall hung out here, as did presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon, who dined at the upscale First Cabin Restaurant. For years, John Wayne made the club his second home and docked his boat here. Today, Duke's Place, the resort's entertainment bar, serves up signature drinks and top jazz talent in a bayfront niche that memorializes the iconic actor. For a wedding party staying the weekend, it's a fine spot for dancing and romancing.

Brides interested in hosting a sumptuous "toast at the coast" can choose between two waterfront ceremony sites. Say your vows on the magnificent Beach Lawn overlooking the club's private stretch of sand, or the more intimate Bayfront Lawn, a lush garden setting with a backdrop of bobbing yachts. Perfumed by lavender, roses and hibiscus, and looking out over multimillion dollar bayfront homes, both settings epitomize the essence of California's Gold Coast.

After the ceremony, have your photographer capture memories by the bay, while guests get acquainted over champagne and hors d'oeuvres in the Commodore Room, an indoor-outdoor space with a tropical vibe. Larger receptions are held in The Grand Ballroom, where direct valet service via a private porte-cochere adds convenience and security. The room is striking: a warm palette and damask wall treatments convey a refined elegance, while the eighteen-foot ceiling, five crystal chandeliers and a space-enhancing mirror create sparkle and drama. Adjoining the ballroom is the Coconut Grove Courtyard, an al fresco terrace that's perfect for mingling amidst giant palms and banana plants.

As you would expect at this Four Diamond resort, considerable attention is paid to the cuisine, and the club offers a range of reception packages that include everything from show-off displays and exquisite hors d'oeuvres to staffed carving stations. Menus, which can be customized, feature award-winning continental cuisine made from the freshest seasonal ingredients.

At the Balboa Bay Club & Resort, there are plenty of options for other wedding-related events: Consider launching your festivities with an intimate rehearsal dinner at Henry's Bistro and prolong them at a post-nuptial waterfront brunch at the Balboa Bay Club Grill. Throughout your stay, rejuvenate at the club's 10,000-square-foot spa and full-service beauty salon. Then, after a memorable weekend, bid a fond farewell to your guests at a lobster clambake on the club's private beach.

For the grand finale, sail through scenic Newport Harbor in a gondola, and return to the club for a romantic honeymoon. Indulge in a massage for two, share a late waterfront repast and a bottle of wine, and settle into your plush oceanview suite. Everything is, indeed, perfection at Newport's only luxury waterfront resort.
