Description

Few San Francisco properties can boast as prestigious a provenance as this handsome Nob Hill hotel. Built on the lofty site selected by 19th-century railroad baron and California governor Leland Stanford as the setting for his palatial multimillion-dollar mansion, the Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel still commands the cityscape.

The original edifice was destroyed in the fire that followed the 1906 earthquake, but part of the 30-foot basalt and granite wall that surrounded the spectacular two-acre estate was carefully restored and can be seen on the eastern side of the building. Privacy is still very much part of the charm of this landmark property. The keyhole street entrance opens into a surprising brick courtyard where limos can line up around the bubbling Beaux-Arts fountain.

The large white marble lobby is capped by a Tiffany-style dome of sunlit stained glass and encircled by a classically executed mural celebrating San Francisco history. Here, amid oriental carpets and gleaming antiques, your guests can greet one another or take a seat in the serenity of the darkly paneled, full-service Lobby Bar to sip a cocktail or catch up with old friends. There are three elegant meeting rooms tucked behind a wall of French doors on the lobby level, any of which is a tasteful setting for pre- and post-wedding, corporate or other gatherings. Also on this level is the Vista Terrace, a versatile event space with a sweeping corner view that looks out over city and bay.

From the lobby level a white marble, chandelier-lit staircase leads down to the richly appointed private salons on the ballroom level. The staircase with its two-story mirror is a stunning frame for portraits, but don’t linger too long; other alluring settings wait. On one side of the spacious ballroom foyer, double doors on either side of the coat check station ensure a lively flow into the opulent India Suite, two large chambers warmed by whimsical murals that reflect Leland Stanford’s love of India. Very little is required to turn them into a celebration space fit for a pasha. Across the foyer, more double doors lead to the Stanford Ballroom, where unforgettable features like twin Baccarat crystal chandeliers—which once graced the Grand Hotel in Paris—establish an awesome ambiance. Of course the ballroom can be partitioned for more intimate celebrations, but gala affairs are easily accommodated here. A dance floor sequestered beneath the plush carpeting can be configured to comfortably balance the proportions of dining and dancing. For real extravaganzas reserve the entire ballroom level and let the party flow seamlessly from one enchanting room to the next.

Amazingly, the luxury doesn’t end here. Did we mention that catering is handled by the hotel’s own Fournou’s Ovens, which Gourmet Magazine has ranked as one of the best restaurants in San Francisco? This nine-year winner of the Wine Spectator award is known for its creative seasonal cuisine, a cellar boasting more than 8,000 bottles of wine, and a selection of gorgeous ultra-private dining rooms. The hotel also provides a glamorous wedding suite for the bride and her attendants as part of the wedding package. Once you arrive you won’t want to leave. So don’t. Book one of the guestrooms and bask in the afterglow of a splendid event, before setting out for your next adventure from this glorious, top-of-the-hill address.
