Why We Like This Place
You'll have an "Ah, yes!" reaction the moment you step inside St. Stephen's. The church, nestled in a shady hillside on lush Belvedere Island, has a landmark interior of soaring concrete columns and walls. They create an immediate and powerful sense of sacred space—the perfect setting if you're seeking eloquent simplicity and a sense of connection with the divine. A heavenly blue ceiling crowns the long, high, narrow nave, and slender vertical bands of stained glass filter sunlight down onto the church's hand-carved wooden altar and baptismal font. Small torches flank the pews, casting soft candlelight during ceremonies, and the church's massive organ of polished wood and gleaming pipes is played in a building long noted for its superb acoustics. For post-ceremony celebrations, St. Stephen's beckons with a paved courtyard and a handsome parish hall. The courtyard, planted with Japanese maples, flowerbeds and bamboo, smells lightly of rich, damp earth and fragrant greenery. It's an inviting spot, with an almost secluded feel, bounded on one side by a wall of the church and on the other by the hall's exterior, a façade of ground-to-ceiling windows and tall wooden columns.
When you enter the hall, you realize you're in a brilliantly designed place. The hall's main space is like the interior of an exquisite, light-splashed wooden box. The floors are simple blond wood, the walls are rough-finished softwood of slightly varying shades, and the gently curved ceiling is trimmed with eye-pleasing lattice. Gentle light passing through the courtyard-facing glass wall, as well as the windows that look out to Belvedere Lagoon, Tiburon's tiered mansions and Angel Island, gives the airy room an inner glow. The artfulness of the hall's design shows through in its ability to accommodate any color palette.
The hall has direct access to a full-size restaurant-style kitchen with tons of counter space. Most local caterers (the church is happy to recommend some) are familiar with St. Stephen's and love working here. There's a bridal dressing room downstairs, and the groom's room leads through the sacristy directly to the sanctuary—a perfect setup for the groom and his men to discreetly make their way to the altar as everybody awaits the bride's grand entrance. (An important note: Remember to ask about St. Stephen's requirements for premarital counseling and the use of the church by baptized persons, as well as the playing of appropriate music at the ceremony.)
This is a place of lovely spaces, each of them wonderfully suited to its purpose. From the pageantry and solemnity of the wedding ceremony to the hours of celebratory laughter and joy that follow, everyone who moves through and around St. Stephen's will remember the experience with pleasure.
