St. John’s United Church of Christ

Description

Throughout its history, the United Church of Christ has championed diversity and equality to a degree that should impress even the most progressive-minded individuals. Since its inception in 1957, the UCC has embraced all ethnicities, actively supported Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights struggle, and ordained the first openly gay minister in any Christian denomination. As you would expect, this unwavering commitment to acceptance and openness is at the core of all seven UCC San Francisco enclaves, including St. John’s United Church of Christ. Anyone is welcome to get married within its sanctuary, regardless of religious affiliation or sexual orientation.

St. John’s certainly looks the part of a typical church from the outside, with its peaked roof, stained-glass windows, and tiny cross high upon a bell tower. But inside, the feeling is one of great warmth: the intimate sanctuary nearly glows during the day from light pouring in through the numerous stained-glass windows (which happen to depict bible scenes). All this light brings out the rich, honey-colored wood in the open-beamed ceiling and in the rows of matching pews. A large stone cross is the centerpiece, and seasonal banners, candles and two flags (one of planet earth and the other the rainbow flag) add spiritual touches to the décor. On one side of the sanctuary, a carved wooden mural by artist Jean-Claude Gaugy shows a stylized Jesus ministering to the poor.

In this space, nearly any kind of wedding or commitment ceremony can take place. You need not be a member to marry at St. John’s, and the church staff will happily accommodate whatever format you envision for your I-do’s. You may write your own vows and bring in your own officiant, though the church’s minister is also available to perform the ceremony. She’ll work with you to create a compatible service, incorporating your religious background or using selections from the UCC Book of Worship’s many heartfelt passages on the meaning of marriage.

Once the ceremony has concluded, small groups can adjourn to the downstairs meeting hall for an informal reception. The room is basic but inviting, and works well for hors d’oeuvres or a cozy buffet. On this floor, the wedding party will also find a ladies’ lounge and small "wedding room" for those last minute touch-ups.

In this open and affirming church, folks ranging from young interfaith couples to middle-aged same-sex couples have tied the knot in their own special ways. St. John’s United Church of Christ offers a space imbued with a friendly, non-judgmental spirituality, and those seeking the same will find it a joyful place to make their love official.
