Why We Like This Place

Near the north end of San Bernardino, as the highway begins its long climb over the mountains, Shandin Hills Golf Club sits at the base of a dramatic ridge of steep, rounded hills and shelters a great prize: a red-shingled white gazebo, ringed with flowers and surrounded by a broad, painstakingly manicured lawn. The gazebo nestles beside a large reed-fringed pond (home to several duck families), in the middle of which a fountain dramatically shoots high-flying bursts of water. Seven slender palms on the pond’s opposite side complete the scene and evoke a classically Southern California tableau.

It’s easy to imagine the lawn decked out with white chairs facing the gazebo, pond and palms, and the club’s looming namesake hills beyond—a picture-perfect wedding site. But possibly the best (and perhaps the most subtle) thing about this wonderful space is the sweet scent from nearby mulberry trees that often wafts through the gazebo. Years after your ceremony here, the pleasant smell of mulberry leaves will remind you of the special day you had at Shandin Hills.

The club’s Terra Vista Room is just right for a post-ceremony celebration. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows reveal the massive San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains to the north, and a view west and south into the heart of the course. Shandin’s rolling greens, dotted with sycamores, flowering magnolias, palms, willow, eucalyptus and those wonderful mulberry trees, look like a well-tended park. It’s a vista that offers an always-soothing backdrop to the festivities.

Terra Vista’s rough-hewn support beams call to mind an informal country place, but the room can also be very sleek: the entrance takes you past a chic bar, trimmed in dark wood and backed by long mirrors over blond wood cabinets. The opposite side of the room extends out toward the golf course, making space for a built-in oak dance floor.

If you’re planning a more intimate event, Shandin Hills’ Garden “Room” is delightful—especially for a fall or spring reception. Open to the elements or enclosed by large canvas draperies, this covered patio area provides a wonderful indoor-outdoor experience. Stamped concrete floors give it an old-world charm, while tropical plants, waterfalls and colorful mandevilla climbing the walls and hanging from the ceiling bring nature “inside.” The most dramatic elements are the handcrafted stone-and-mahogany pillars topped with elegant street lanterns.

Of course, the test of a place is its cuisine, and the word of mouth about this experienced facility is that the food is quite good. The chef has been with the club for over twenty years, there’s a wide range of menus, and the staff has an easy-going willingness to accommodate budgets and tastes.

Did we mention the icing on the cake? How about a spacious bridal suite with a leather sofa and chairs, three mirrors and lots of closet space, plus a fully equipped bathroom? Not a bad place to get ready for one of life’s great adventures.

Like all good golf courses that host weddings, Shandin Hills creates a serene, away-from-the-crowd feeling. As you enjoy your delicious repast, while gazing out at the fairways and the striking panorama beyond, go ahead and congratulate yourself for having made such a wise choice.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The Club holds up to 250 seated guests, indoors or outdoors.

EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The Terra Vista Room accommodates up to 250 seated guests, the Patio seats 100 guests and the outdoor lawn can accommodate up to 300 seated guests.

MEETING CAPACITY: The banquet room accommodates up to 220 guests seated theater-style.

Fees & Deposits

A nonrefundable deposit, which is applied to your food and beverage total, is required to reserve your date. The amount of the deposit is equal to 25% of the estimated event total. 50% is due six months prior, and 100% of the final estimated balance is due 10 days prior to the event date. Meals range $26–61/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.
