Description
Attracted by the balmy weather, azure ocean, and la dolce vita of a small seaside town, scores of artists settled in Laguna Beach in the early 20th century. In fact, the first art museum in California was founded here in 1918. Since then the city has established itself as a major player in the art world, hosting numerous galleries and summer art festivals, proud and indulgent of its boho-chic artist population.
Perhaps the most remarkable addition to the city’s art community is [seven-degrees], a "multi-purpose idea lab for the promotion of artistic endeavor, invention and exhibition." Built in 2001, its mission is not only to showcase original art but to support the efforts of emerging artists through its in-residence programs. And fortunately for you, one of the ways this innovative entity sustains itself financially is to make its unique facilities available for special events.
Nestled in Laguna Canyon aa few blocks from the ocean, this uber-modern glass, steel and granite complex is a visual marvel. The all-glass façade, whose asymmetry and angular lines defy conventional architecture, reflects the surrounding canyon walls while revealing the artwork displayed inside.
When you have an event here, you immediately become part of the art scene. Enter through the gallery, where you and your guests can peruse the exhibition du jour. Then pass by the live/work studios of the artists-in-residence, which are often open for viewing works in progress. Before the festivities begin, mingle with family and friends in the courtyard between buildings or ascend to the Hillside Terrace, a tentable rooftop patio with multiple uses. Ceremonies are often held here, but the space is also perfect for an outdoor cocktail reception. In addition to canyon views, there are meandering trails with bamboo railings, leading to a series of overlooks built into the canyon walls. A gentle waterfall and lush plantings among the rocks make this setting an unexpected oasis.
Nature takes a back seat to your own creativity in the Media Lounge. Unadorned, it’s a simple, 4,500-square-foot oblong room with a clean, modern look. But with the help of an in-house design team, the latest in lighting technology and a phalanx of on-site audiovisual equipment, you’ll be able to transform the space into anything you like. Past metamorphoses include a Rococo-style ballroom with gilded mirrors and jacquard textiles; a midsummer night’s dream with a forest’s worth of potted plants and flowers; and a postmodern discothéque thumping with sound and light. Live webcasting is available, and you can even project an image of yourselves (or anyone else!) on internal or external surfaces. Your guests will be part of an unforgettable multimedia experience, limited only by your imagination. [seven-degrees] is a true original in the world of event venues, a place inspired by and dedicated to art. Fees & Deposits
A $5,000 nonrefundable deposit is required to reserve your date. Full-service packages start at $35,000 minimum for Saturday events. There is adjusted pricing for events on other days, call for details.
