Why We Like This Place

Without warning, it can strike even the best-organized engaged couples: GGLS better known as Gargantuan Guest List Syndrome. If you’re suffering from this affliction, take heart. An affordable, welcoming venue in San Jose has the antidote. The Scottish Rite Center can comfortably accommodate every one of your relatives, neighbors and friends, with plenty of room to spare. At over 40,000 square feet, this site ably fills the bill no matter how elaborate an event you envision.

So think big. Think theatrical. In fact, in the Starlight Room, the Center’s second-floor ballroom, large-scale dramatic productions are mounted year-round. Here you’ll find a full-size proscenium stage bedecked in vintage gold velvet curtains; tri-level seating set off from a huge parquet dance-floor; and still enough banquet area for dozens of tables. The ballroom’s light green carpet blends nicely with almost any floral scheme. Consider twining tiny sparkling lights around the railings that separate the seating area from the dance-floor, or placing tall candelabra at strategic points around the room. Set pieces and props of just about any size work well in this space. Should you find that your guest list hasn’t actually hit four figures, you can always partition off one or more sections of the ballroom with collapsible "air walls."

You’ll understand why the Starlight Room received its name if you take advantage of the sizable brick-and-concrete terrace just outside the long bank of windows. On San Jose’s balmy summer nights, this area will easily entice your guests outside to go stargazing. You’ll find ample room here to set up a bar or two, more cocktail or banquet tables, or to let the dancing spill over from inside.

For smaller events, such as a rehearsal dinner, bridal shower or birthday party, a downstairs meeting room is also available. With light-colored walls and gold carpeting, it’s ready for your decorator’s finishing touches. A generous brick patio, where tables and chairs can be set up on a sunny afternoon, also adjoins this space.

If your bridal party more closely resembles a full Greek chorus, no worries—there are changing rooms, showers, and professionally lit makeup rooms in abundance on site. The main dressing room also boasts a washer and dryer, as well as a closed-circuit television with a feed from the stage that will ensure your grand entrance is perfectly timed. There’s even a print shop on the property; conceivably, you could make last-minute changes to your menus or programs, and still have them on every table in time for your celebration to begin.

With a substantial crowd on hand, adequate kitchen facilities are a must-have. Here, the Scottish Rite Center really shines: its full-sized, industrial kitchen is every caterer’s dream, whether you’re planning a light buffet or a feast with multiple suckling pigs. Any catering company is welcome, and you can bring in your choice of beer, wine and hard liquor.

Perhaps the most attractive aspect of this venue is its staff. The Rental Manager and at least one staff-member are on hand during every event at the Center, be it a wedding, prom or charity casino night. Put yourself in their capable hands, and you can be sure that your festivities will go off with nary a hitch.

As we were going to press, the Center was gearing up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of San Jose’s Scottish Rite. Celebrate your wedding day here, and you’ll have a fitting launch to your own history as husband and wife.

Fees & Deposits

50% of the rental fee is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 30 days prior to the event. Rental fees range $500–11,000 depending on space rented.
