Sacramento Grand Ballroom

Why We Like This Place

Just blocks from the State Capitol in the heart of downtown Sacramento sits an elegant neoclassical temple, looking incongruously as if it has wandered in off the Acropolis. Back in the early 1900s when asparagus kings and pear moguls ruled the Central Valley, they needed some place to stash their profits; where better to display that wealth than in a bank-cum-temple complete with stately Corinthian columns and 45-foot-high ceilings?

Built in 1912 by riverboat entrepreneur D.O. Mills and his friends, it was the biggest bank west of the Mississippi in its day, but it still wasn’t grand enough for its owners, who lavished a Roaring Twenties-style makeover and expansion on it just fifteen years later. After narrowly escaping a wrecking ball in the 1980s, the bank has morphed into one of the most stylish and spacious wedding sites in the region.

Its soaring interior extends 124 feet—about a third the length of a football field—with walls and floor sheathed in gleaming taupe marble. Pilasters inspired by the Vatican divide a series of towering 20-foot windows reaching from halfway up the walls to the coffered gold leaf ceiling. They flood the interior with light and showcase the city’s skyline.

The room is especially appealing at dusk, when it changes into a glowing, spectacularly lit place with a great open feeling. Adding a fun element are the old brass-and-beveled glass tellers’ cages, which now serve as a bar—guests order and pick up drinks through a row of windows marked "Paying and Receiving."

Because it can accommodate up to 420 people for a sit-down dinner and 600 for a cocktail reception, the Ballroom has become a favorite of ethnic communities ranging from Indian to Persian to Chinese, who often prefer large late-night receptions. While the food served is usually prepared by one of the caterers on the Ballroom’s preferred list, you’re free to bring in your own licensed and insured caterer. Guidance is available on everything from calligraphers to transportation, but you’re also welcome to design your event completely on your own. That flexibility has meant that the unusual is the norm here: the Ballroom has witnessed dragon dances, tea ceremonies, and even brides ordering in pizza from their favorite college hangout as a late night snack for guests.

Versatility, however, is combined with elegance. Guests arrive through a marble side vestibule where they sign the guest book (and leave their coats in winter). Wedding ceremonies are held at the north end of the room, which is set up with flower-decked risers, arches or gates, according to the bride’s preference. The bride ascends a staircase from the changing area in the old safe deposit vault under the main floor to make her grand entrance at the south end of the room. Sometimes she opts for even more drama, by entering through the large brass doors at the front of the bank.

Guests come directly to the bar after the ceremony, where hors d’oeuvres are served next to the marble dance floor, and a 40-foot head table typically stretches beneath the windows. Uplighting from the massive octagonal chandeliers casts a romantic golden light off the ceiling, creating a candlelit ambiance for evening receptions.

While the Ballroom specializes in hosting weddings, it’s also popular for proms, holiday parties, fundraisers and corporate events. Whether you choose to enjoy its classic style as is, or add your own creative touches, the Sacramento Grand Ballroom is an exceptional place for a celebration.
