Rancho Los Cerritos

Why We Like This Place

If the centuries-old Moreton Bay fig tree in the backyard of Rancho Los Cerritos could talk, it might tell tales of California's rich Spanish, Mexican and American history. One of the stories would be about early Long Beach, when it was an open, pastoral land where cattle and sheep grazed. In 1844, a rancher by the name of John Temple settled down and built his home here. Today, his Monterey Colonial-style house is one of the few remaining two-story adobes in Southern California, and the five-acre estate is a national, state and local historic landmark. It's also a little-known wedding venue—one that preserves the spirit of a slower, more gracious time.

As your wedding guests arrive, they'll be transported to the genteel era of early California ranchos. Have them gather for cocktails on the front patio, a tranquil area surrounded by pepper trees and native plants. While they're socializing over drinks, you and your bridesmaids can sip champagne and put finishing touches on hair and makeup in the home's cozy library off the tiled sun porch and courtyard.

The Rancho's grounds offer numerous possibilities for staging your event. The inner courtyard, shaded by California sycamores, is built around a rectangular pool afloat with water lilies and presided over by a bronze toad spouting water. Flanked by lawns and enclosed by the home on three sides, its fine natural acoustics make it an excellent spot for a ceremony. In the lush backyard, footpaths, flowering shrubs, grapevines, fruit trees and fragrant roses weave through a secluded grassy expanse, half shaded by that venerable Moreton Bay fig. Here, you can arrange tables and chairs beneath its sheltering branches, or tent the area for an indoor/outdoor experience. The famous tree looks amazing, especially when uplit at night. If you're hosting a rehearsal dinner, consider serving it in a more intimate spot next to a giant blooming cactus and a Native American adobe oven. At Rancho Los Cerritos, you're free to use the estate's grounds in a variety of ways, letting your guests flow naturally from one area to another throughout your function.

There are a multitude of photo ops on the estate, but be sure to have some wedding pictures taken in the "arbor," a trellised walkway dripping with fragrant lavender that makes a gorgeous backdrop.

The adobe house is now a museum furnished with 19th-century artifacts, and period-dressed docents are available to conduct tours during your event. Catering at Rancho Los Cerritos is handled by Thank Goodness It's Sofia, an innovative catering and event planning company that will customize your menu no matter what the occasion, be it an early California barbecue or an elegant dinner party.

If you're philanthropic by nature, you'll be glad to know that a portion of the site fee is a tax-deductible donation to the foundation devoted to maintaining the Rancho for generations to come. But beyond your contribution, you and your guests will enjoy celebrating in this private setting that resonates with echoes of a colorful past.
