Description
As you drive up the road to Rancho de las Flores, past acres of iris and daylily fields and thousands of avocado trees, you can’t help but wonder what kind of an event site awaits you. Well, this one’s a real beauty. Set high up on a hillside, it has an almost 360-degree view of the surrounding hills, covered with lemon, orange and avocado orchards. A breeze blows in from the ocean, some fifteen miles to the west, and the only sounds are the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. Standing in the midst of so much natural splendor, you’ll have a hard time believing that Los Angeles is less than an hour away.
Owners John and Cynthia Schoustra have turned their hilltop home into a little bit of heaven. John, who has a background in landscape architecture and expertise in discovering and breeding new plants, has created a place that not only serves as a teaching facility for landscape professionals, but also provides a flower-filled aerie for weddings.
Both the ceremony and reception are held outdoors in this garden of delight. The bride (who has just gotten ready in her comfortable, air-conditioned dressing room) makes her entrance from behind the house and walks across the lawn to the Panorama Garden, a symphony of foliage textures and subtle flower colors that gently frame the views. Here, she and her groom exchange vows in a graceful white gazebo nestled in a cluster of trees. Guests are seated facing the gazebo, and have the dual pleasure of watching the ceremony and taking in the spectacular view: east to the Reagan Library and Santa Susana Pass; north over the foothills to the Topa Topa Mountains; and west past Ventura to the Channel Islands.
For receptions, tables and white chairs are set up on the lawn or in the Monet Garden, an Impressionistic "painting" of vibrantly colored flowers, shaded by Monet-style rose arbors. Sunshine warms the soft Pacific breezes, which carry a constantly changing array of fragrances—sage, citrus, rose, pine and other botanical scents. The clean country air whets your appetite for the delectable meal you are about to enjoy. Prepared by the highly regarded chefs of Command Performance Catering, it will feature a menu of gourmet selections, and if you like, can be personalized with one of your own favorite recipes. After dinner, guests stroll over to a spacious covered patio for dancing. From here, they can also watch the sun set, the moon rise, and the city lights flicker on in the distance.
Rancho de las Flores may be a working ranch, but the only thing you’ll be conscious of in this lovely setting is your brief, yet breathtaking, sojourn on top of the world.
