Description

Rancho Capistrano has been described as “a spiritual oasis where people can find peace and balance in their lives.” Having strolled through the beautiful grounds of this expansive conference and retreat center, we’d say it’s an oasis in a literal sense as well. Located just north of San Juan Capistrano, the property features a serene lake, ringed by palms, weeping willows and eucalyptus; buildings are separated by broad lawns and surrounded by stands of trees. This verdant scene is made even more striking by the rolling hills encircling the property.

Weddings are held in the sanctuary or at the beautiful Hacienda, a sprawling adobe ranch house on a hill just above the lake. This former private residence has all the charm of the gracious, mission-style homes of the early 1900s. The interior is full of exquisite details: Spanish-tiled fireplaces; vibrant hand-painted birds on the walls; arched windows and doorways; and finely stenciled beamed ceilings. The living room is often used for beverage service or displaying the cake, while the dining room is a favorite spot for rehearsal dinners or small receptions.

Receptions are held on the spacious patio in front of the Hacienda, in the vast courtyard behind it, or in the Plaza. The old-California feeling of the ranch is most strongly felt on the patio, a long, terracotta-tiled terrace punctuated by towering palms. The classic adobe Hacienda is on one side, a wall of trees curves around the other, and a grand fountain anchors the space. The courtyard, which is bordered by the buildings that house the guestrooms, has tiled paths that lead, like the spokes of a wheel, to a fountain at its center. A refreshing fountain is also the focal point of the newest area, the Plaza. Here, it’s surrounded by cobblestone bricks, majestic trees and flowering plants.

The most popular ceremony site, by far, is on the grassy slope just above the lake. It’s hard to imagine a lovelier setting: your guests are seated in rows of white chairs with the lake and hills in the background; to the left is a densely forested hill, and to the right a quaint old adobe house nestled in a grove of trees. The Ranch also has its own sanctuary, with a piano, organ, a stunning stained-glass window, and a glass wall with an inspiring waterfall vista.

Overnight guests will enjoy their stay in Spanish mission-style rooms, conveniently located right off the Hacienda courtyard with a view of the fountain. Note that although Rancho Capistrano is a Ministry of the Crystal Cathedral, all denominations are welcome here.
