Description
For those who consider eating well-prepared food and drinking fine wine to be just this side of a religious experience, Sonoma County must seem like the Promised Land. A year-round cornucopia of fresh produce is available even in the most remote corners of this fertile region, contributing to an abundance of award-winning restaurants and wineries. One of the most intriguing of these is Ramekins, a combination home-cooking school, bed and breakfast, and convivial event facility.
Located just a few blocks from Sonoma’s historic town square, Ramekins’ architecture reflects the area’s Spanish heritage with its tile roof, rammed-earth walls and second-story balcony. Its interior, however, reflects an altogether different heritage: one based on the culinary arts. Unless you’ve recently consumed a substantial meal, your thoughts will gravitate to food as soon as you pull open the fork-and-spoon-handled doors. Paintings line the walls, some of luscious fruits and vegetables, some of people engaged in a multitude of food-related pursuits. The day we visited, the irresistible fragrance of baking bread perfumed the entire building!
The first floor of Ramekins houses two kitchens: one, a beautifully appointed demonstration kitchen; the other, a restaurant kitchen used for full-participation, hands-on classes and commercial baking. But the heart of the facility is the Vineyard Room, the preferred spot for wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners and other festive gatherings. Despite its grand moniker and generous proportions, the Vineyard Room has the coziness of a living room. Here you’ll find a bar, an oversized fireplace, tile-and-carpeted floors, and an earthy color scheme full of appetizing tans, taupes and beiges. The two-foot-thick rammed earth walls give the space a comforting solidity, as do the unusual trussed wooden beams supporting the peaked ceiling. Potted topiaries, paintings, and Oriental rugs add more visual interest. Doors open onto a sunny garden patio, which can be used in conjunction with the Vineyard Room. Shaded by trees and market umbrellas, and brightened by a wealth of potted flowers, it’s a delightful place to mingle before dinner. In the evening, the patio’s twinkle lights echo the candles on the tables, and scents from a sprawling herb and flower garden blend with the tantalizing aromas of cooking food.
No matter how scrumptious the food, a special event needs the support of an attentive and caring staff to be memorable, and the folks at Ramekins pride themselves on their outstanding service as much as they do their food. Their Special Events Director will work with you to make sure that your event runs as smoothly as crme anglaise. Of course, at Ramekins, you need do nothing more than relax and savor the gustatory wonders prepared by the executive chef and his talented staff. Speaking of relaxing, let’s not forget the Bed and Breakfast side of this facility. You and your closest family and friends can stay overnight here in extreme comfort. The "decorator showcase" guestrooms include features like antique pine furniture, fireplaces, cozy sitting areas, balconies, great views and lots of thoughtful amenities. Really, for a Wine Country getaway, this place is in a class by itself.
