Why We Like This Place
If you love the idea of a romantic wedding aboard a luxury liner, but not the thought of departing on a cruise, the Queen Mary—permanently docked in Long Beach as a hotel and attraction—offers the perfect solution. On this historic ship you can celebrate in the height of luxury-liner elegance without ever leaving port.
The legendary Cunarder, RMS Queen Mary, set out on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City in 1936 and was considered the only way to travel for the world’s rich and famous. During WWII she ferried U.S. servicemen to Europe, and after the War she carried war brides and their children from Europe to their new homes in the USA. Fortunately, while other vintage vessels have been scrapped, the Queen Mary has survived with most of her splendid fittings intact and is now celebrating 40 years at her permanent home in Long Beach.
As soon as you step aboard the Queen Mary, you get a sense of the glamour of a bygone era. She’s a treasure trove of Art Deco design, with event facilities guaranteed to wow your guests. Seventeen Deco-style salons are available for receptions, and collectively they feature a wealth of handcrafted detail including exquisite paneling, unique light fixtures, etched-glass doors, original murals and carved marble fireplaces.
You can have a cocktail reception on one of her decks while enjoying cool ocean breezes and skyline views, or even hold one in the engine room among the exhibits, pipes and boilers. If you’re planning a large celebration, reserve the ship’s 45,000 square-foot Exhibit Hall. Its three levels, connected by stairs and escalators, are quite versatile. Some couples stage dinner and dancing on the lowest level, use the second level for a children’s area, and turn the top level into a cocktail lounge. But that’s just one scenario—this grand space can be configured any way you like.
The Queen Mary also provides both outdoor and indoor ceremony options. To take advantage of the sunshine or sunset, get married on the bow or stern. For a more traditional setting, the finely crafted Royal Wedding Chapel is a stunning choice. Completely paneled in softly glowing wood, the intimate chapel features a leaded-glass panel that serves as a sparkling backdrop for an exchange of vows.
It’s no mystery why every year hundreds of couples have their wedding on this extraordinary landmark: the Queen Mary is truly one-of-a-kind and the only one of her kind left in the world.
