Queen Anne Hotel

Description

Built in 1890 by Comstock silver king Senator James G. Fair, this landmark building started out as Miss Mary Lake’s School for girls, and narrowly escaped destruction by the famous 1906 quake. Thankfully it survived as one of San Francisco’s best examples of Victorian splendor, and became an award-winning B&B hotel.

Many of the Queen Anne’s notable architectural features have endured, and except for contemporary elements like telephones, high-speed internet, elevators and luxurious bathrooms, not much has changed over the last hundred years. In 1980 the structure was carefully restored, retaining as much of the original as possible: marble sinks, crown moldings, leaded-glass windows, inlaid parquet floors and wood-burning fireplaces.

As you walk into the Hotel, the Lobby and Parlor make an immediate favorable impression. They’re handsomely furnished with antiques, including the front desk, a public telephone booth (previously a confessional), chandeliers, and five-foot-high carved oak paneling. Elegant ceremonies are held in the Parlor, a rich repository of Victorian influence. Not only is it filled with period antiques, it also has two fireplaces and a Queen Anne-style baby grand piano. Large windows are framed with heavy swag drapes and hung with Irish lace, which diffuses incoming sunlight. Above the room’s wainscoting, walls are painted a deep burgundy. A grand oak staircase off to one side has enabled many a bride to make a picture-perfect entry. Surveying all the beautiful details, you realize that you won’t need to worry about decoration—it’s already been done!

Receptions and other types of events are held in the Salon, the Hotel’s original dining room. It’s also vintage 1890s, with gold-and-burgundy wallpaper, mirrors, chandeliers, a fireplace and heavy swag drapes gracing tall windows. Two sets of French doors lead to the Courtyard, a covered patio bordered with flowers and small trees. It has its own bar, and makes a charming space for mingling and relaxing in the fresh air.

It may not be possible to have your wedding in a castle, but come to the Queen Anne to be treated like royalty.
